Martin Scorsese, having done 'Taxi Driver' and 'Goodfellas', has produced his first family film, shown at the Fourcroft Hotel on the first Monday in November.
'Hugo', based on a novel by Brian Selznick, is about a young orphan struggling to survive after being abandoned by his uncle. Hugo (Asa Butterfield) lives inside a giant clock and gets into trouble with the officious but comically inept railway inspector (Sacha Baron Choen).
The film slowly built up, with excellent character pieces by the likes of Christopher Lee, Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour. The second half, telling the story of an early film-maker, sparkled with infectious joy.
This movie is a visual treat, and was an unexpected pleasure to watch.
Classic film on Monday is 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'.
