A local watersports club was on the crest of a wave this week after receiving a major cash injection from one of the county's top theme parks.

Surflink, the Tenby-based organisation that brings together windsurfing, surf life-saving, rowing and kitesurfing activities on the South Beach, has benefited from a £5,500 donation from Oakwood Park, along with an equal sum of Sportsmatch Cymru funding from the Sports Council for Wales.

The money has already been put to good use by sponsoring the purchase of a new life-saving jet ski and tractor.

Surflink has over 150 members from Pembrokeshire and beyond that benefit from the club's equipment and experience.

The club aims to provide a safe environment for children aged 11 and upwards to learn and practice watersports.

Jules Rilstone, Surflink's chairman, explained why the purchase of the new equipment was so vital.

"Our old 4x4 vehicle wasn't able to cope with getting equipment from the clubhouse to the beach which meant everything took twice as long and was twice as difficult," he said.

"With the new tractor we are able to move equipment with ease across the sand. The jet ski has proved invaluable for surf life-saving purposes, comfortably holding three people, and is fantastic for training purposes as we can coach alongside the children."

Owen Bowen, Surflink's treasurer, expressed his delight at the sponsorship.

"We were delighted that Oakwood agreed to sponsor Surflink; it's a great opportunity for the park to get its name seen by holidaymakers on the South Beach and more importantly the equipment will make a huge difference to the club and the children who benefit from it," he explained.

"Oakwood's initial sponsorship enabled us to apply for Sportsmatch Cymru funding from The Sports Council for Wales to get the full amount we needed. It's fantastic that local businesses can work together to get support from The Sports Council."

Paddy McNamara, managing director at Oakwood, added: "We're delighted to be associated with Surflink as we are two like-minded organisations that base our principles on providing fun activities for the youth of the county."

Surflink will be running training sessions over the summer months and is holding an event day for anyone interested in getting involved in windsurfing, surf life-saving, rowing or kitesurfing.

The event will be held at the Surflink clubhouse in Tenby's South Beach car park on July 17 and begins at 11 am. Please 'phone Owen on 01994 231384 for more information.
