New signage to inform dog owners in Tenby that their pets must be kept on leads on the streets within the town at all times has been called for.
The Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, also stated that signs to combat fly-tipping should be introduced for the resort, too.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, she told her colleagues that over the course of the summer, she found herself “enlightening” culprits in the town on both sets of rules.
“People are filling bins in the town with household rubbish and dumping blackbags by the side of bins. It’s fly-tipping and it’s illegal!” she said.
With regards to people not keeping their dogs on leads in the conservation area, Clr. Mrs. Lane commented that if the locals didn’t know the rules, then how could the town expect visitors to abide by them.
“Within the conservation area such as Tenby town centre, dogs must be kept on a lead. If your dog is not on a lead, then you are not in control of it; it doesn’t matter how good people think their dog is!
“I got told by one person that it was ‘ridiculous and rubbish’, but we need more signs across the town to let people know of the ‘dogs on leads’ rule,” continued Clr. Mrs. Lane.
Councillors agreed that there was still some confusion about what areas of Castle Beach dogs were exempt from over the summer.
“I had cause to speak to several dog owners on this matter who were on the beach over the summer,” the town clerk, Andrew Davies, told members, explaining that the law was designed to let dogs on to part of Castle Beach, but only really to allow them access to the Caldey boat trips.
“If this is still being abused, then we need to get clarification,” commented the Mayor, Clr. Laurence Blackhall, with his fellow members agreeing that more and clearer signage was needed on the town’s beaches, regarding the areas that dogs were permitted to go during the seasonal ban.
Clr. Mrs. Lane also suggested that small signs stating ‘no fly-tipping’ could be introduced on the rubbish bins.
