A day of Continental-style wining and dining is about to bring the ambience of the Mediterranean to Tenby.

Part of the resort will be closed to traffic while tourists are encouraged to spill out of pubs and restaurants to sample 'Café Culture' in the streets and on the pavements of the mediaeval walled town.

Following a successful experiment last summer, this year's event will be boosted by extra attractions. There will be more street entertainment, improved catering facilities and the introduction of arts workshops for parents and children.

Next Sunday, June 16 (Father's Day) all motor vehicles will be turned away from High Street and Tudor Square near St. Mary's Church in Tenby's historic town centre. From 11 am to 6 pm, restaurateurs and landlords will provide a relaxed eating and drinking experience in streets usually busy with traffic.

'Café Culture' is organised by Tenby 2020, a group of traders, residents and volunteers.

Chairman Mike Thorne said: "The idea is to stimulate business in the town. We want to demonstrate how attractive this ancient town could become with less motor traffic at its heart. Café culture is also a way of extending the traditional holiday season and adding to the events which attract day visitors."

Circus performers Jugglestruck and local guitar duo Bluestone will entertain al fresco diners. Dancers from the Hynes School of Irish Dancing will be accompanied by live music performed by Redwing. There will also be music from the Brian Jobson duo and guests. A caricaturist and a portrait painter will be joined by a pavement artist who will encourage others to 'have a go'.

Top Welsh chefs Sarah Duggan and Carl Hughes will provide cookery demonstrations using local produce. Carl, of the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, is a Tenby boy. His father Graham is chef at his own restaurant, the Cellar Bistro.

Joining Sarah and Carl will be two Tenby-based chefs, Tom Hunt, of The Reef, and Roger Bannister, of the Blue Dolphin Hotel. The demonstrations will take place between 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm.

Arts workshops for parents and children will provide an additional attraction at the Greenhill Community Education Centre. Workshops will include circus skills for all the family, disco dancing for seven to 11-year-olds with Dyfed Dance, music making and hip hop dancing for 12 to 16-year-olds.

Five pubs and restaurants - Pam Pam, the Bay Tree, Tenby House, the Lifeboat and the Plantagenet – are taking part in 'Café Culture'. Others will be contributing by promoting local produce.

Tenby 2020 is part-funded by the European Union through PLANED (Pembrokeshire Local Action Network for Enterprise and Development). Pembrokeshire County Council, the WDA True Taste Festival and the Arts Council of Wales also support Café Culture.
