Last week was busy at Tenby Golf Club, with three competitions in the space of five days, the Tipton Cup, the Monthly Medal and the Mathias Thomas Claret Jug.

It was on a balmy evening on Wednesday, May 14, with a light north-west wind, when 80 stalwarts standing on their respective tees heard the sound of the air horn (shotgun) ringing loudly from the top of Black Rock. This was the signal for battle to commence for the Tipton Cup.

The course was in good condition, and provided a challenge for all who played, with a crosswind on most holes, giving that extra degree of difficulty. Most of those who played demonstrated that the course was indeed a challenge.

The Tipton Cup is played as foursomes stableford, which after foursomes must be the most difficult format for pairs. Thus David Kaye's and Bob Wiseman's 41 points can only be described as awesome. Neil Lovatt and Ralph Johns came second with a good 36 points, winning over Clive Webb and Joe Taylor on the back nine.

There were seven pairs who scored twos; they were Geoff Aston/Ron Johns, Mike Brew/Matt Brown, Peter Brown/Mike Allen, Roger Schooling/Allan Keating, Dave Morgan/Sam Morgan, Clive Webb/Joe Taylor and Mervyn Tucker/Richard Hyland.

MONTHLY MEDAL

The monthly medal was held on Saturday in contrasting weather conditions. There was a strong south-westerly making the outward holes very long and the inward holes difficult to judge. Mixed in with the wind were some showers in the morning, making it even more difficult.

Most of the scores reflected the difficulty of the day. However one stood out head and shoulders above the rest, that of David Morgan, who scored 79 gross, 67 net - a remarkable score in such conditions.

Results were as follows: Division One - 1. S. D. Morgan net 67; joint 2. M. Creese, P. G. Hoyland, R. Morton, 72. Division two - joint 1. I. Thomas and R. N. Gwyther, 74; joint 3. J. A. Stenson and R. J. Hall, 76.

Those who got twos were M. J. Allen, S. G. Amos, J. Haley, R. J. Hall, S. R. Hilling and J. Preston.

MATHIAS THOMAS CLARET JUG

On Sunday, similar weather conditions to those on Saturday faced the competitors in the Mathias Thomas Claret Jug, for mixed foursomes.

Thus the winning net score of 72 by Heather Morgan and Mervyn Tucker is outstanding. In second place were Helen and David Morgan with 76 and third were Lindsay and David Moran with 79.

Only one pair achieved a two, namely the winners, Heather Morgan and Mervyn Tucker.

It was a busy five days in some difficult conditions, but each competition was won by some very good golf.
