A bustling Bank Holiday in Tenby gave a welcome boost to businesses that were able to open over the Easter holidays, as thousands descended upon the seaside town, coinciding with the sunny weather and also the visit of celebrity walrus - dubbed Wally by some!
After a week of ‘holidaying’ in Tenby and taking in a busy Bank Holiday in the seaside town, the question now is ’Where’s Wally?’ as the visiting Arctic walrus - appears to now have moved on, having not been spotted around the lifeboat station since Monday.
“The town has been very busy as we’ve welcomed our visitors back from all over Wales to Tenby, and of course we’ve been blessed with very good weather,” said the town’s Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sam Skyrme-Blackhall.
“We had all ages coming to the town, young families...elderly couples, coming to enjoy the beautiful sunshine - and why wouldn’t you want to come to beautiful Tenby especially on the first Bank Holiday this year!
“We’ve seen exceptional numbers to the town - we’re talking thousands of people. We’ve managed as we did last year, when we came out of the main lockdown back in June, but social distancing has and alway will be an issue whilst Covid remains.
“I referred to it last year as the ‘holiday heads’ where people come to an area for a break, and it’s almost like Covid has disappeared and it never existed!
“I’ve alway said, it is a balance, and it will continue to be a very difficult balance - but all that we ask is for people to remember that the pandemic hasn’t stopped, just because you’re able to go on holiday, so please try your best to adhere to the guidelines which are in place for a reason.
“Our businesses were very well prepared, and of course takeaway services were available for those wanting refreshments. Businesses have been very keen to open up where they can, it’s been a very long winter,” she continued.
Sadly, there was a smattering of anti-social behaviour brought to the town, which the Mayor stressed was caused by a very small minority.
“Tenby was busy, as thousands came to enjoy, but sadly there was a small minority, who were in danger of spoiling it for others - through vast littering, excessive drinking, and some treating streets and gardens as public conveniences, which I did sadly witness! This is showing no respect to the town or its people, or to themselves really,” remarked Clr. Mrs. Skyrme-Blackhall.
“On a litter note, why would you want to litter such a beautiful place? Ultimately, everyone has to take responsibility, so with regards to your litter, there are plenty of bins within the town, but if you can’t find a bin, bag it up and take it home with you.
“All I ask is that people respect the town and its people. We have many thousands of visitors who come here year after year, who come to enjoy the experience that is Tenby, and we don’t want it spoilt for them, we want them to enjoy a pleasant stay
“I’m very privileged to be born and bred here, and we don’t want our local community or our visitors to be subjected to this sort of behaviour,” added the Mayor.
