Easter weekend has traditionally been the start of the tourist season, and this year, with record breaking temperatures leading up to the weekend, we at the Observer wanted to see whether the weather had brought record numbers of people to the area.
Chris Ebsworth, of Folly Farm, said that it was the busiest Easter period they had ever seen, with figures suggesting that they were around 30 per cent up on attendance from last year.
Most of the visitors Mr. Ebsworth spoke to tended to be from away, but were staying in the area for the Easter period.
The same was true for Oakwood, with spokesperson, Zoe Snell, stating that they had seen guest numbers in the region of 14,000 over the Easter weekend, nearly 5,000 more than anticipated.
Oakwood also reported visitors from as far away as Humberside, Nottingham and Kent, showing the draw Pembrokeshire has within the United Kingdom.
Commerce in Tenby faired well in the sunshine, too.
Howard Lewis, president of the Chamber of Trade and Commerce, stated that most companies had benefited greatly from the late Easter.
"A quiet March has been overshadowed by a frantic couple of weeks, with very high numbers visiting the area," he said.
Mr. Lewis also reported that one cafe in the Tenby area had seen record profits over the bank holiday and hopefully sets the area up nicely for a prosperous summer season.
Hoteliers also reported a busy Easter period, with many being fully booked around a week before the bank holiday as news of the good weather filtered through the country, which was helped slightly by the presence of the GMTV weather crew in Tenby last Thursday, before the Easter break.
Local tourist information centres also reported large numbers of inquiries.
At Tenby TIC, 1,649 passed through the doors, while at Saunders, the number was even greater at 2,124.
All in all it was a successful start to the season for thetourism industry in South Pembrokeshire, and now everyone is hoping that the weather stays the same, so the success of last weekend will continue through the summer months.
