Pembroke County Ladies Two Rink League 2009

The lady bowlers have been very busy battling each other and the ghastly weather. Their 'two rink league' is well advanced.

The Tenby ladies, captained by Lynn Delabertouche, is continuing their winning streak of 2008 season.

The West Wales Ladies Bowling Association, led by this year's president , Audrey Owens, of the Tenby club,  are equally busy, rattling through their inter-county games and their many trophy games.

Berkshire County on Tour

The weather was very unkind, but playing Tenby on the Friday in fine windy conditions suited them well.

The game was a story of two halves, Tenby players rattled a healthy lead in the first 10 ends, but the tourists conquered the fast tricky rinks with aplomb, winning on four of the six rinks, beating Tenby by 15 shots.

It was lovely to see Terry Howells and Tommy Nutt  enjoying a rare visit to the green this season.

Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only) were:

S. Askew, B. Cloake, R. Taylor, T. Brown 21; R. Orme 10.

E. Maher, D. Rees, T. Nutt, T. Howells 23; B. Dillon 25.

S. Taylor, B. Winstone, B. Barnikel, G. Hewitt 16; R. Etheridge 31.

A. Lloyd, H. Meades, K. Williams, M. Gouldingay 12; B.Greenway 18.

R. Hurlow, C. White, J. Taylor, L. Hilling 17; A. Bartter 22.

R. French, T. Brutnell, G. Beynon, D. King Thomas 19;  G. Oxtoby 17.

FIVE ARCHES 96 (10 pts.) NEYLAND 72 (4pts)

Neyland returned to Tenby last Thursday to finish off their league Division Two game against a Five Arches side that were losing by seven shots when heavy rain forced the cancellation of the game twelve days earlier at just about the mid-way stage of the match.

Before the game began, members of both the ladies and men's teams stood in silent tribute to Tenby Bowling Club member Cecil Evans who had passed away.

The game restarted in much better conditions than when it was halted by rain and this suited the Arches bowlers who set about the task of overhauling the seven-shot deficit.

As league leaders, Neyland wanted to build on their points total, but found the Stena Line sponsored Five Arches side in much better form with the sun on their backs.

This was a good team performance with Tony and Graham's rinks consolidating on their 'first half' scores and a great comeback by Roy and his team only to narrowly fail to win at the very end, but it was enough to see the Arches side secure a 24-shot victory and 10 valuable league points.

An enforced change saw Ken Lloyd replace Lee Richards at skip and replacement Jon Hubbard start the game at third. The Arches rink began this session eight shots down and quickly found themselves 14 shots adrift and looked well beaten until Eamonn and Ben found their line and length. The rink fought back but finished losing the game by nine shots.

Skip Tony Brown and his team of Luke, Clive and Ashley were all in good form and were always out in front winning the game comfortably by 13 shots.

On rink three, skip Roy Powling began the restarted game 14 shots down, but his team of Ron, Tony and Gwyn fought back well and had the chance to take the lead on both the penultimate and last ends only to finally lose the game by three shots.

Graham Hill and his team of Stuart, Cameron and Mike had little difficulty in containing and beating a Neyland rink skipped by an ex-Arches player Geoff Nuthall. They dominated the game conceding only five ends to finish the game with a 23-shot margin.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Neyland skips only) were as follows:

E. Maher, B. Cloake, J. Hubbard, K. Lloyd 19; A. King 28.

L. Rees, C. Webb, A. Hooper, T. Brown 27; G. Robson 14.

R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 18; McKay 21.

S. Askew, C. White, M. Gouldingay, G. Hill 32; G. Nuthall 9.

Tenby 101 (14 pts.)

Castle 57 (0)

The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team entertained Castle from Haverfordwest last weekend. It was vitally important the home side put in a good performance to maintain their current form and top of the table status.

Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, John Roberts and Andrew Muskett were drawn on rink one. This was a tight contest up until the 15th end, but Andrew and his men then applied the pressure, closing the match out by 18 shots.

Neil Dickinson, Mike Jackson, John Baggott and Peter Day were always in control in their match. All four contributed well to cross the finishing line 14 shots to the good.

Gerald Hewitt, Joe Richards, Craig Guymer and Phil Carpenter were on rink three. The Tenby four totally dominated the early stages, but over the last four ends, they unfortunately lost 10 shots to see the visitors dangerously creep to within three shots.

Luke Guymer, Bert Barnikel, Jon Webb and Dai Kingdon were in a similar contest to rink three. Running away with an early lead, the home rink looked secure, but again a late rally by the opposition saw them get to within seven shots of the Tenby rink.

Maximum points once more for captain Dai Spencer and his Tenby team, maintaining their relentless push for the league title.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Tenby team are in Carruthers Shield action. This will be the biggest game of the season at Sutton Street with the prize - a semi-final place in this coveted competition. The opposition are a very strong Troedyrhiw outfit. Kick-off time is 2.30 pm. Tenby reached this stage last year when they were beaten by Penhill, but this year, Dai Spencer's blue and white army are hoping to make the last four.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Castle skips only):

Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, John Roberts, Andrew Muskett 26; D. Summers 8.

Neil Dickinson, Mike Jackson, John Baggott, Peter Day 26; B. Hall 12.

Gerald Hewitt, Joe Richards, Craig Guymer, Phil Carpenter 27; K. Thorpe 22.

Luke Guymer, Bert Barnikel, Jon Webb, Dai Kingdon 22; B. Absalom 15.
