CARRUTHERS SHIELD
Tenby 118
Victoria 77
The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team were in Carruthers Shield action last Saturday.
The opponents were Victoria Bowling Club who had travelled down from the Swansea area.
With conditions ideal, both teams took the green with the sole intention of progressing to the next round.
Drawn on the show rink were Neil Dickinson, Mike Jackson, John Roberts and Pat Currie. Honours were even at the halfway stage, but two counts of five in the latter stages helped elevate the Tenby four into a commanding position. The final result was an impressive 18-shot victory for the boys in blue.
Joe Richards, John Baggott, Craig Guymer and Phil Carpenter were always on top in their contest. The home rink raced away to an early lead, dominating throughout, to come away with another 18-shot win.
Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Jon Webb and Andrew Muskett were involved in a bizarre match. Andrew and his men went four down after three ends, but then picked up an amazing 20 shots with consecutive counts of five over the next four ends. From end eight on, the Tenby lads only scored four singles, which somehow saw them over the winning line by two shots.
Luke Guymer, Ashley Hooper, Peter Day and Paul Diment got off to a flyer in their contest. They raced into a 15-nil lead, but took their foot off the gas, allowing the opposition a chance at 17 ends. Paul, always the cool customer, managed to push his troops over the winning line by three shots.
A convincing 41-shot victory to the home side was the final outcome, advancing the Tenby team safely into the next round.
Saturday, July 4, is the date for the next round, where Tenby have a home tie against tough opponents in Ammanford Park.

SA BRAIN CUP
PEMBROKE DOCK PATER 69 (0)
FIVE ARCHES 95 (2 pts.)
The Stena Line sponsored Five Arches team won the second of three mid-week games in their sector of the SA Brain Cup against Pembroke Dock Pater last Thursday evening.
This was a comfortably 26-shot win, but there were a few anxious periods during the game when the Pater team threatened a recovery, but in the end surrendered to a stronger Five Arches unit.
Skip Jon Hubbard and his four were back to winning ways and were always in front, but did it the hard way, winning only nine of the 21 ends. Jonno's boys quickly established a 12-shot lead and managed to hold on despite a spirited comeback by Pater, to win the game by a five-shot margin.
Roy Powling and his team carried on from where they left off on Saturday, winning by 11 shots and in doing so picked up the kitty for the second successive game. After losing one shot on the first end, Roy's rink were never behind and went on to a comfortable win.
Skip Tony Brown and his squad had to battle all night for their one shot win. Tony's quartet had been behind for all of the game and found themselves five shots down starting the last end. Excellent bowling on the last end from the Arches rink saw them pick up a six and go on to win by a solitary shot.
Two changes were made to the starting line-up of skip Lee Richards's rink, with Dave Rees and Kenny Williams coming in for their first games of the season. They all got off to a great start and were eight shots up after just two ends. The game was close at the midway stage, but once the 'new boys' found the green, the result was secured by a nine-shot win.
Rink scores (Five Arches first, Pater skips only) were as follows:
E. Maher, C. White, M. Gouldingay, J. Hubbard 24; S. James 19.
R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 21; B. Duncombe 10.
L. Rees, C. Webb, A. Hooper, T. Brown 20; S. Davies 19.
D. Rees, K. Williams, K. Lloyd, L. Richards 30; D. Gwynn 21.
Bowls marathon
Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the Tenby club undertake the mammoth task of 24 hours of continuous bowling; a sponsored fund-raising event.
This year, the club is fortunate in having the betting firm, one of their regular sponsors Coral, supporting with a substantial boost to the machinery replacement fund coupled this year with the Help for Heroes charity.
It is believed that quite a lot of the young bowlers are threatening to bowl in the middle of the night - they may be surprised to find that there is very little 'night' at this time of the year. Hope no-one has an enforced nap on the green with all those bowls rumbling by!
League progress
Included in the bowls marathon will be the Tenby v Milford Haven first division league game. Every bowl delivered, trial ends, dead ends will be counted.
The Tenby division one team is 20 points clear at the halfway point in the 2009 season. If they keep up this very high standard, they could very well be league champions again.
Looking at the broader picture, Tenby have always been dominant leaders in the county of Pembroke. In the 1990s, they ran out winners for seven years on the trot.
The current very talented side, under the captaincy of popular David Spencer, could very well continue this amazing trend.
Talking of talent, tomorrow sees new member, but no stranger to the immaculate Tenby green, David Kingdon turning out for Tenby.
David, a Welsh international, winner of the famous Gold Cup a record five times, is skipping what looks like a very strong rink. Good luck Tenby.
