Feast of friendlies

With the 2009 season rapidly approaching, many members will be polishing up their bowls for what looks like another very busy season.

There are over 20 friendly matches lined up. Visiting bowlers have been the lifeblood of our club's existence. There was one very famous match on our green just after the war which greatly helped to put us on the map, big time.

Post war: After the war, with the gradual increase in leisure activities and paid holidays, the sport of bowls started to expand and younger men took more interest in this game of skill.

At the Tenby club's annual general meeting in 1950, the players committee requested permission to play matches on Sundays, mainly to cater for the increasing number of friendly games, which would help with the club's struggling finances.

World bowls: 1950 saw the start of major tours by our bowling cousins from America and the Commonwealth countries that had become prosperous after the war.

Tenby was honoured by the Welsh BA in 1951 when it was chosen as the venue for the Pembroke County BA v New Zealand touring side. Obviously the occasion was considered to be of some importance, borne out by the list of diners at the ensuing celebratory meal.     (Talk about getting in on the act!)

Present were the 45 tourists and their wives. They were entertained by one Member of Parliament, six Mayors, 17 town councillors, the home team, 10 Welsh BA officials,  15 Pembroke County BA officials, 16 officers representing all of the clubs in the county of Pembroke and six directors of the Tenby Bowling Club Limited. An amazing 15,000 draw tickets were printed and distributed throughout Pembrokeshire to raise funds for this prestigious and very successful event.

Darts report

After the previous week's whitewash, a return visit to the Swan Inn was not eagerly anticipated. The match started ominously with a hammering in the 1001 and the loss of the first three singles games, but good wins by Tony and JR gave the bowlers hope.

All three doubles were close affairs, but the Swan proved stronger and held out to deservedly win the match 6-3.

Many thanks once again to the travelling fans. Overall a plucky performance, and hopefully the bowlers can get back to winning ways tonight (Friday) at home to the Parsonage.
