st. mary's 22 pendine 9

St. Mary's played in the Merick Owen League last Wednesday and recorded an excellent win. Cameron White and Arron Lloyd played up front, both showing great promise and kept the Pendine front end well under control. Jonathon Hubbard played third and consolidated on the front two, while Neil Hensman played skip saving shots on the last few ends. Overall a very good performance.

Advanced junior coaching

Area development bowls coaching  co- ordinator, Tony Shaw, picked a marvellous venue last Sunday, Tenby bowling green in superb weather, to put  several budding teenage bowlers, girls and boys, through an advanced bowling course. Tony was assisted by  three Welsh bowls coaches, who assessed the youngsters performance - Neville Ruff, of Saundersfoot, Peter Gilder, of Pendine, and Tenby Bowling Club's vice-chairman, John Baggott - our head of junior coaching (which includes 'taster' sessions for members of our junior school).      The standard of bowling was high as expected, for these talented youths are the future stars of Pembrokeshire and Welsh bowling.  The sessions lasted a total of seven hours so they all slept well that night, especially Tony, who is doing an excellent job.  Catering was in the capable hands of Lynn Delabertouche and Doris Brown so a great day was had by all.

Milford Haven 49 (0) Tenby 96 (14 pts.)

After two weeks without a game, the Layton & Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team travelled to Milford Haven last Saturday. Sitting at the top of the league by a four point margin and still unbeaten, the Tenby lads were in confident mood to tackle what could be a difficult and tricky away green. Luke Guymer, Bert Barnikel, Simon Evans and skip Pat Currie were drawn on rink one. Pat and his men were always just ahead throughout the contest and an impressive finish under pressure saw them emerge as eight-shot winners. Rink two consisted of Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts and Peter Day. The Tenby four raced into a 15-2 lead by the half-way stage, and never looking back, they cruised to a comfortable 13- shot win. Next up was Terry Howells, Joe Richards, Andrew Muskett and Phil Carpenter. Closely contested early on this one, but the second half saw the Tenby rink pull away, finishing up 13-shot winners, celebration of the day going to Andrew. Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Craig Guymer and Paul Diment were on the fourth rink. Again nip-and- tuck for the first-half, but with Webby on top form, the Tenby quartet eased away to a convincing 13- shot victory. The maximum 14 points and match winners by 47 shots was the final outcome. Captain Dai Spencer was once again full of praise for the determination and commitment given by the team. Next up, tomorrow (Saturday) is a home match against Haverfordwest second team, Castle, with a 2 pm start. Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford skips only): Luke Guymer, Bert Barnikel, Simon Evans, Pat Currie 21; L. Power 13. Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts, Peter Day 26; D. Buchanan 13. Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Craig Guymer, Paul Diment 24; T. Ellyatt 11. Terry Howells, Joseph Richards, Andrew Muskett, Phil Carpenter 25; Barry Howells 12.
