Bowling club whist drives are held twice weekly on Monday and Thursday at 7 pm sharp. New members and visitors are always welcome. Touring season
This Sunday, May 11, sees the start of the many friendly games played by the Tenby bowlers against over 20 visiting tours into Pembroke County, this year. These matches are great fun and very important revenue earners. Members are requested to keep scanning the notice board and try and play as often as they can; everyone will get their fair share. Tourists love playing at the Tenby club, as they know that the superb green lends itself to high class play. Tenby has a reputation for being worthy opponents, winning most games, so they do their hardest to upset Tenby's applecart, all played in very sporting way.
Bonus ball winners
Wednesday - Lynn Delabertouche; Saturday - Evan Day. Kitchen news
The refurbished 'players' kitchen looks really swish. All that's required is lots of volunteers, either sex, preferably with a maths degree to cope with the demanding programme of team teas, coffee mornings, afternoon teas and, most of all, hosting the serious and prestigious Welsh Women's Bowling Association events. One of the finest examples of service in the kitchen in the rich history of the Tenby Bowling Club was that of Cis Charrington, wife of Fred. Cis was one of the nicest bowlers on all fronts. Quiet, hard- working, always smiling and a very good bowler. One year in the 1980s, Cis announced that she would be finishing bowling at the end of the season, but that she would serve afternoon tea every day for the next two years, which she did - a stunning gesture, very much appreciated by members and visitors alike.
Kiosk man
It is that time of the year when visitors start enjoying beautiful Tenby, in particular they love our many varied shops. I think it is called retail therapy! Our little sales kiosk naturally has to be part of this bonanza. A simple round of 'putting' on our 18- hole course or an hour or two of bowling, brings happiness to many who wish to relieve the stresslines. Now comes the perennial problem. Once again, volunteers are required to man the outlet. Once, the club had an outstanding volunteer, namely Mr. Harry Robins. Harry was a true Tenby Bowling Club enthusiast, who gave many years of his life doing voluntary service in the putting/bowls hiring outlet. His other great love was classical music. He joins the special group of members who have been included in the rich history of Tenby Bowling Club. Is there anyone who can emulate Harry?
FIVE ARCHES 102 NEYLAND 50
Last Saturday, Five Arches played host to Neyland on what was a very windy day, but it remained dry right up to the end - despite the weathermen forecasting heaving rain. After the previous week's win, The Arches were ready to take on Neyland, who had just come down from the first division so they new what to expect. After a very good game, Five Arches came out top on all four rinks, with a 14 points win and a shot advantage of 48. Rink three saw Stuart Askew, who was on form, supported by a Doug Silcox up front and Alex Watt and Tony Brown as skip, who pulled of some very good shots. At the interval they were 11 shots up and the margin remained the same at the end of the game. Rink four saw Ron Hurlow and Lee Richards up front, both having very good games, with Mike Gouldingay and John Moffat at the back end. At the interval, the Arches were three shots up and again it remained the same at the end. Up front on rink five were Jim Taylor and Graham Hill, who were both on form, with Ashley Hooper and Ray Holly at the back end. No disrespect to the opposing team, but this was a one horse race. At the interval, The Arches were 10 shots up and went on to increase their lead to 17 at the end. Rink six was much the same with Ken Lloyd and Luke Rees up front, followed by Gwyn Beynon and Roy Powling at the back end. At the interval, they were 10 shots in front and in the second half went on to increase their lead to a massive 21, also winning the sweep for the second week running. After the game, captain Mike congratulated the Neyland Ladies, who won overall by just three shots with each team winning one rink (they had been playing alongside the men), and wished captain J. Roberts Snr all the best for the forthcoming season. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Neyland skips only): S. Askew D. Silcox, A. Watt, T. Brown 24; B. Barret 13. R. Hurlow, L. Richards, M. Gouldingay, J. Moffat 20; C. Welham 17. J. Taylor, G. Hill, A. Hooper, R. Holly 31; J. Edwards 14. K. Lloyd, L. Rees, G. Beynon, R. Powling 27; R. A. Evans 6. Many thanks to Five Arches' sponsors, Stena Line, Welsh Shop, Tees-r-Us and Millfield Consulting.
