All the juniors are gaining experience playing in competitive games such as this.
PEMBROKE DOCK PATER 42 FIVE ARCHES 115
Last Saturday, Five Arches travelled to Pembroke Dock Pater for their first game of the new season. Last time they played there they only came away with one point, but the players put that behind them this time and a good game was had by all. Eventually, Five Arches went on to win by a margin of 73 shots and 14 points, which could be a record win for them. Rink one saw Ron Hurlow and Lee Richards up front, who both had good games, with Mike Gouldingay and John Moffatt up against J. Goll and M. Ronald, who were both on form. At 10 ends, the Arches were six shots up and held on to that lead to win overall by a five-shot margin. Rink two saw Jim Taylor and Graham Hill up front, who gelled together to put on a good performance, with young Joe Richards and Ray Holly at the back end also having good games. At the interval they were 11 shots up and kept the pressure on to win overall by 26. Rink three saw Stuart Askew and young Adam Hensman up front, with Alex Watt and Tony Brown at the back end. The first half was very close, with the shots going either way and at 10 ends Arches were only two shots up. The second half was much the same, but the Arches won the last six ends to eventually win by 11 shots. Rink four saw Ken Lloyd and young Luke Rees up front, with Gwyn Beynon and Roy Powling, playing his first game of the season, at the back end. All put in a fantastic performance and, no disrespect to the Pater players, but this was a one-horse race from start to finish. At the interval, Arches were 15 shots in front. The second half saw them carry on where they left off and and they went on to win overall by 31. They also won the sweep as the highest winning rink, which meant that young Luke carried on from where he left off last year. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Pembroke Dock Pater skips only) were as follows: R. Hurlow, L. Richards, M. Gouldingay, J. Moffat 21; M. Ronald 16. J. Taylor, G. Hill, J. Richards, R. Holly 34; S. Davies 8. S. Askew, A. Hensman, A. Watt, T. Brown 22; J. Turley 11. K. Lloyd, L. Rees, G. Beynon, R. Powling 38; S. James 7. GOSCAR 20 PEMBROKE DOCK 16
Goscar also travelled to Pembroke Dock on Saturday for a Meyrick Owen match and came away with a win. But what a close game it was. Leading for the rink was Dai Rees, who was wearing a headband and looked as though he had had one over the eight and walked into a door. Brian Winstone was at two, with Cyril Roberts, still enjoying his bowls, at three and Harry Ebdon as skip. At 10 ends it was all level, but in the second half, Goscar put on the pressure to win by a margin of four shots.

Our good wishes also are extended to Ann Lewis and Ceris Hewlings, of the Saundersfoot club.

Tenby 114 Haverfordwest 45
Last Saturday saw the first match of the 2008 league season for the Layton & Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team. The visitors were last season's third-placed side Haverfordwest. If Tenby were going to be serious title contenders, this contest would provide a good benchmark. First up on rink one was Pat Currie with support from Luke Guymer, John Baggott and Simon Evans. The Tenby quartet were in scintillating form, which ended in the demolition of their opponents by an incredible 29 shots. Not even the news of Man United's defeat could take Pat's mind off the task in hand. On rink two, Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts and skip Peter Day were in action. Similar to rink one, the men in blue were literally 'on fire', blasting their opponents away by an excellent 24 shots. Dai Spencer, Ashley Hooper, Craig Guymer and Paul Diment got off to a flyer in their match. Racing into a 9-0 lead, the Tenby rink was then pegged back slowly but surely; it needed all of Paul's guile and craft to steer the home rink to a narrow two-shot victory. Terry Howells, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett and Phil Carpenter were in a closely fought battle early on. After the interval, the Tenby four put on the afterburners and cruised away to a well-earned 14- shot win. An outstanding 69-shot margin and the maximum 14 points was the final outcome of this first league match. This was an impressive start for the Tenby team and captain Dai Spencer had nothing but praise for his men. With no game at the weekend, the Tenby lads now have their sights set on a massive encounter next Wednesday in the Carruthers against Whitland. Rink scores (Tenby first, Haverfordwest skips only): Luke Guymer, John Baggott, Simon Evans, Pat Currie 39; C. Jones 10. Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts, Peter Day 31; P. Jenkins 7. Dai Spencer, Ashley Hooper, Craig Guymer, Paul Diment 19; P. A. John 17. Terry Howells, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett, Phil Carpenter 25; R. O'Leary 11.
