TEXACO PAIRS
Tenby Bowling Club's annual Texaco Pairs competition once again proved a great success. Played over two days last weekend, a total of 40 pairs took part in the event, which happily was blessed with fine weather - and a high standard of bowling - throughout. The popular tournament was initially played in four groups, with the winners and runners-up from each qualifying for the knockout stages. In fact, the quarter-finals saw an interesting mix of both local and visiting bowlers, with results being as follows: Owen Evans and John Wilson (Pontardulais) bt Pat Currie and Peter Day (Tenby) 5-2. Robin Burden and Dylan Williams (Brynhyfryd) bt Gareth Thomas and Adrian Price (Ammanford Park) 6-0. Dai Spencer and John Baggott (Tenby) bt Terry Preston and Gwyn Beynon (Tenby) 7-5. Kevin Morgan and Rob Hughes (Havelock Park) bt Kieran Peregrine and Wayne Owen (Ammanford Park) 7-4. In the semi-finals, Evans and Wilson accounted for Burden and Williams by the narrow margin of 9-8, while the last remaining Tenby pair, Spencer and Baggott bowed out to the men from Havelock Park, going down by seven shots to three. In fact, Morgan and Hughes, were the eventual winners, defeating the Pontardulais pair 9-6 in the final. They were later presented with their trophy by Mr. Morgan Hall from sponsors Texaco.
GREAT NIGHT
Last Wednesday saw the Junior Academy enjoy their party and fun bowling. They had to bowl blindfolded, with the wrong hand, with their legs tied together and back to front! There was as much laughter from the watching parents as from the juniors themselves. Margaret Robb and sister Vi had prepared a magnificent buffet, which was quickly despatched by all and sundry. It was also Dai Robb's birthday, and he was presented with a huge card and a glass beer mug suitably inscribed. This had all been paid for by the juniors and parents, but that was not the end - all the coaches received presents, not one, but two and in some cases three. To say they were all overwhelmed is putting it mildly. Master of ceremonies were Helen Spencer and Christine White, and we think they were behind the organising of the gifts. Dai also received gifts from the juniors for all the hard work he had put in organising the season's coaching. Secretary Dai Spencer and 'Simo' were not forgotten either. It was a wonderful way to end the season, and on behalf of the coaches, to our wonderful juniors, 'thank you'.
TENBY 75 CROYDON 99 Confusion reigned at the start, as our visitors arrived with only five rinks instead of six. These super keen bowlers from the big city certainly enjoyed the surroundings and the weather. As one visitor remarked, I should have put some sun block on, which was greeted with wry smiles by Margaret and Mike. Only winner on a disappointing day for the home side was Pauline Barnikel and her rink. With Brian Winstone and Tony Shaw in great form, they went on to win by 11 shots. A strong 'back end' with Helen Baggott and Gwyn Beynon still could not prevent a loss by three shots, while Vera Williams and her crew suffered a six shots loss. Mike Crockford and his foursome went down by eight shots, while Mike Gouldingay and his rink found the opposition in great form as they lost by 16. Rink scores (Tenby first, Croydon skips only): J. Taylor, H. Meades, R. Wilkins, V. Williams 13; V. Rowe 19. D. Brown, G. Beeken, L. Evans, M. Gouldingay 6; W. Rowe 22. G. Brutnell, B. Winstone, T. Shaw, P. Barnikel 22; F. Espoti 11. P. Jones, H. Ebdon, H. Baggott, G. Beynon 17; P. Burnett 20. L. Howells, K. Williams, M. Skyrme, M. Crockford 13; L. Jones 21.
BONUS BALL
This week's lucky winners were Mel and Ray and Mavis Holly. AUTUMN
Evenings are getting shorter and the season is rapidly drawing to a close. Only three more friendlies to go, while this weekend sees the club finals being held, with a buffet on the final day. The order of play is now displayed on the notice board. Tonight (Friday) sees the Five Arches hold their end of season party in the club, while another annual fixture is the Christmas Draw, with the sheets now being displayed. If it is anything like last year, it should be a roaring success.
