Yorkshire Cup
This is one of the longest running sponsored events in the bowling fixture card, generously sponsored by the Yorkshire Building Society for over 20 years. Recently it reverted back to 'singles' and is a popular round-robin format, which is a great leveller. It is played in whites every August Bank Holiday Monday, with the Yorkshire Cup and cash prizes for the winners.
Friendlies
September sees a crop of friendly fixtures for members to enjoy and the now famous Texaco Trophy Open Pairs, when 80 players from many parts of Wales spend the exciting weekend vying for the magnificent trophy and prize monies, so generously sponsored annually by Texaco Ltd. (Pembroke) The club finals are also approaching very quickly. It looks like some new names may well appear on our internal trophies this year. Finals weekend is September 4 and 5.
TENBY BC 148 TENBY GC 148
Such was the affection in which the late Arthur Ormond was held by these two clubs, that this year seven rinks were fielded by the two sides playing for the magnificent crystal bowl presented in his memory. The regulation dress for the bowlers was greys and whites, so Pat Currie turned up in his Welsh international red shirt - "just to wind up Viv John," he explained. Now Viv, a former British Isles triples bowls champion, loves nothing more than a challenge, as he and his rink battled out a draw with the Tenby captain. Regulation dress, greys and whites, so Andrew Muskett turned up in a two-tone blue tee-shirt. "It's designer material," he volunteered, but the consensus of opinion was that it was purchased third stall on the right in Carew Market. Regulation dress, greys and whites, so Peter Day displayed a grey tracksuit-cum-romper outfit, but Peter is rather laid back anyway, so we were just grateful he did not turn up in bathing costume. Played over 15 ends, the home side gave the golfers 12 shots on each rink - "very generous," said captain Richard, hardly able to contain his excitement. Paul Haley displayed all his wares as an ex-bowler and led his rink to a big 11-shot win. Peter, Dai and Gerald were all rather laid back about it all, while Johnathan came out with the usual excuse," I had nothing up front." Simon Rowell roared his rink on, as if he were playing Youth rugby again and encouraging his pack of forwards. For one minute we thought they were going to scrum down on the green. "He's played before," said Craig Guymer about Chris Hughes, but we managed to convince him this was not the case, as he and Ian Thomas - showing skills his late grandfather, Trevor Lloyd Jones, would have been proud of - gave impressive displays. Neil Dickinson and Brian Diment also pushed their levels up another notch as they eased home to a five-shot win over Mike and his crew. It was a great night, enjoyed by all, with the best wine waitress in Tenby, Lynne, serving drinks throughout the game. The ladies also served up a fabulous buffet, golfers' captain Richard presented ties to president Ben Owens and club captain Mike Crockford, while a bowling tie was presented to the best golfer-bowler on the night, Paul Haley. The trophy, meanwhile, remained in the possession of the Bowling Club as, amazingly, the overall result on the night was an honourable draw. Oh, and by the way, regulation dress, greys and whites... as per normal, the two Terrys, Preston and Howells, were immaculately attired! Rink scores (bowlers first) were as follows: L. Guymer, T. Powling, G. Beynon, D. King Thomas 27; P. Watkins, T. Martin, P. Rees, J. Best 18. T. Brutnell, J. Richards, C. Guymer, M. Crockford 19; I. Thomas, C. Hughes, B. Diment, N. Dickinson 24. H. Meads, A. Tenby 85 (10 pts) Pembroke Dock 76 (4)
Last Saturday saw the battle for the runners-up spot in the county championship. The Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team entertained high-flying Pembroke Dock, who along with other contenders Whitland all have their sights set on finishing second to the unassailable Saundersfoot. Rink one skipped by Terry Howells rushed into a 10-0 lead. But for some unknown reason the wheels suddenly fell off, and his rink of Luke Guymer, Jon Webb and Dai Newth ended up losing by nine shots. On the next rink, captain Pat Currie also raced into an early lead. His rink of Sam McNeilly, Dai Spencer and Craig Guymer never took their foot of the gas after that and ran out easy 11-shot winners. Star of the rink was Mr. Mac putting in an excellent performance at lead. Gerald Hewitt, Bill Bailey, Terry Preston and skip Simon Evans were involved in a very close battle. Simon and his men went into an early lead, but were soon pegged back, from then on it was nip and tuck all the way. The Tenby rink unfortunately dropped a four on the 20th end which proved to be conclusive, and a two-shot defeat was the final outcome. Andrew Muskett and his rink of Steve Taylor, Reg Thake and Peter Day were always in control in their match, taking two counts of five on their way to an impressive nine-shot victory. An overall win by nine shots was the match result, which has now drawn Tenby level with Pembroke Dock in second position. The Pembroke lads still have a game in hand, so it looks like a close contest for the last few games of the season. Rink scores (Tenby first, Pembroke Dock skips only) were: Gerald Hewitt, Bill Bailey, Terry Preston, Simon Evans 20; D. Burns 22. Steve Taylor, Reg Thake, Peter Day, Andrew Muskett 26; L. Davies 17. Luke Guymer, Jon Webb, Dai Newth, Terry Howells 14; R. Pointon 23. Sam McNeilly, Dai Spencer, Craig Guymer, Pat Currie 25; H. Hangar 14.
MILFORD HAVEN 106 (12 pts) FIVE ARCHES 57 (2)
A lovely August afternoon, perfect for bowls, saw the Arches travel to Milford hoping to repeat their win in the first encounter earlier in the season. However, the season has changed and the Arches suffered another heavy defeat, only picking up two league points and are now dangerously close to the bottom of the division. The Arches played young Joe Richards for his first game, Joe becoming the 32nd person to have played for the Arches in only 15 games. Ray Holly obtained the Arches' two points with a four-shot win over E. Sturley. Picking up a count of four on each of the first two ends, his rink were always ahead and in control and would have won by more if they had not dropped a four on the last end. Mike Crockford, with young Joe Richards playing second, were always struggling. Only six shots down after 14 ends, however, the next four ends saw them concede 15 shots to finally lose by 20 shots. Roy Powling's rink found it hard to start. Not scoring for the first six ends when they were already 15 shots adrift, the remainder of the game was pretty even as he only lost by 17. On the outside rink six, Dave King-Thomas, with Cyril Roberts playing his second game, were always struggling to stay in contention, but after 17 ends were only five shots adrift. However, a disastrous last four ends and 11 shots against saw them lose by 16. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Milford Haven skips only) were: J. Taylor, J. Best, B. Barnikel, R. Holly 22; E. Sturley 18. B. Russell, J. Richards, M. Donoghue, M. Crockford 10; R. Thomas 30. R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 10; B. Howells 27. N. Dickinson, C. Roberts, D. Silcox, D. King-Thomas 15; B. Davies 31.
