Haverfordwest 76 (10 pts)

Tenby 74 (4)

After their long journey to Barry, the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team were on the road again to Haverfordwest, for a league encounter.

With a few key players key players absent, the Tenby men knew they were going to be in for a tough afternoons bowling.

Rink one skipped by Pat Currie were in fine form. Steady performances by Sam McNeilly, Reg Thake and Terry Preston, ensured Pat cruised to victory by six shots.

Dai Newth stepped up to skip for the first time this season. His rink of Dai Spencer, Ray Hine and Alan Redman started very poorly. Good performances in the second half though got them back in with a shout, but they unfortunately just could not consolidate and were finally defeated by three shots.

Luke Guymer, Bill Bailey, Jon Webb and skip Simon Evans were 7-1 down at one stage of their match. But a spirited display by the Tenby rink in the latter stages saw them emerge victorious by two shots.

Peter Day and his rink of Gerald Hewitt, Steve Taylor and Craig Guymer were also slow starters. They were 14-3 down early on, but they managed to pull back slightly after tea, but still went down by seven shots.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Haverfordwest skips only) were:

Gerald Hewitt, Steve Taylor, Craig Guymer, Peter Day 13; C. Jones 20.

Luke Guymer, Bill Bailey, Jon Webb, Simon Evans 16; J. Docherty 14.

Sam McNeilly, Reg Thake, Terry Preston, Pat Currie 28; P. D S. Jenkins 22.

Dai Spencer, Ray Hine, Alan Redman, Dai Newth 17; P. Jenkins 20.

SAUNDERSFOOT 82 (4 pts)

TENBY 90 (10)

On a very blustery Wednesday evening, the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby side were involved in another big game against table-toppers Saundersfoot. Tenby knew they would have to be on top of their game, especially coming off the back of two defeats. From the off both sides seemed well up for the contest.

Luke Guymer, Bill Bailey, Dai Newth and skip Simon Evans were 'up and at 'em' from the start. In a close fought match, Simon and his boys achieved a well-earned four-shot victory, to put Tenby on their way.

Andrew Muskett and his rink of Gerald Hewitt, Alan Redman and Craig Guymer, were in unstoppable form. The opposition did not open their account until the ninth end, which by then was far too late. Andrew and his men ran out easy 22-shot winners.

The first negative return of the night was on Terry Howells's rink. Dai Spencer, Reg Thake and Peter Day kept 'scrapping' away, but in the end the Saundersfoot men came out on top by eight shots.

Captain Pat Currie's rink of Sam McNeilly, Jon Webb and Terry Preston lost their match by 10 shots. But the drama was all on this rink, as this was the last game on the green.

Tenby were holding an overall lead of five shots going into the last two ends. On both of the final ends Pat was down by the five shots Saundersfoot needed, and twice he drew shot for his rink to secure the overall victory for Tenby.

This was the first time the Saundersfoot team have lost in the league this season, so captain Pat was delighted with the Tenby team's performance on the night.

Tomorrow (Saturday), is local derby day for Tenby Bowling Club as Tenby play Five Arches in the league at 2.30 pm.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Saundersfoot skips only) were:

Gerald Hewitt, Alan Redman, Craig Guymer, Andrew Muskett 31; P. Diment 9.

Luke Guymer, Bill Bailey, Dai Newth, Simon Evans 21; P. Carpenter 17.

Dai Spencer, Reg Thake, Peter Day, Terry Howells 22; S. Poole 30.

Sam McNeilly, Jon Webb, Terry Preston, Pat Currie 16; M. Bishop 26.

NEYLAND 70 (3 pts)

FIVE ARCHES 73 (11)

What a week! When selection took place at the usual time on Monday morning, the Arches only had 11 players available, with two regular skips and two thirds missing. Initial thoughts to postpone the game were agreed to by the Neyland fixture secretary, but subsequent discussions with the county secretary revealed the penalties that this action would incur. The game had to go ahead, even if the Arches travelled with only 12 players, four rinks of triples, and lose 25 per cent of their score on each rink.

Good news in the middle of the week, Ray Holly's hospital appointment on the Friday was postponed, meaning the Arches were back up to 12 players, with four Goscar players filling in the gaps.

On Friday, Mike Crockford, up in London for a medical appointment, managed to bring the appointment forward. This enabled him to catch an earlier train from Paddington and, with his wife picking him up by car at Carmarthen, he arrived home in Tenby at 4.30 in the afternoon. Another skip available. Thanks again go to Stuart Askew, who was due to play, but agreed to stand down at the last moment; the Arches will need him later in the season.

The game itself started badly, Neyland being 22 shots up after 11 ends. Two rinks, those of Ray Holly and Dave King-Thomas, were always in contention and both finished seven shots to the good.

Ray Powling's quartet were 11 shots down after 11 ends. However, a strong run to the finish, which included counts of five and four, plus a two on the final end, saw them gain a creditable draw.

Mike Crockford's crew started badly and after 14 ends were 18 shots adrift at 22-4. A better display in the final third of the match and, similar to Roy, a double on the final end saw him reduce the deficit to 11 shots. These two counts of two shots each pushed the Arches into an overall lead for the first time in the game.

After the trauma of the week, when initially only 11 players were available, an overall win and 11 invaluable points was a tremendous boost to the Arches league position and team moral, especially after the poor show last time out at St. Issell's.

Again many thanks to the Goscar boys who all performed with credit and will undoubtedly be called upon again by the Arches. These were Jack Lester, Cyril Roberts and Dennis Watkins, not forgetting Stuart, who stood down at the last moment.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Neyland skips only) were:

M. Donoghue, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 22; C. Phelps 22.

N. Dickinson, D. Watkins, D. Silcox, D. King-Thomas 19; B. Barrett 12.

J. Taylor, C. Roberts, R. Hurlow, R. Holly 18; D. Sutton 11.

B. Diment, J. Lester, P. Hooper, M. Crockford 14; G. Robson 25.

TENBY BOWLING CLUB 57

TENBY RUGBY CLUB 58

This was the annual contest between the bowling club and the rugby club for the Trevor Lloyd-Jones Memorial Trophy.

It was decided that the rugby club would receive five shots start on each rink as they were non-bowlers (please note the three rugby club skips!). Captains of the day were Pat Currie and Macky Brace.

On the first rink, a close match was fought all the way until the final end. The duelling skips of Jon Webb and Alan Brace ended the proceedings with an honourable draw.

The next rink was just as close, with skips Dai Spencer and George Cavell in action. With both rinks performing well throughout, Dai just managed to nick the game by one shot.

This left the two captains to decide the outcome of the match. Pat raced into a 9-1 lead, but Macky left his best until last and just edged Pat's rink out by two shots, winning the match for the jubilant rugby club.

Post-match Pat and Macky thanked all for turning up on what was a very enjoyable Sunday morning.

Mr. Ian Thomas then had the honour of presenting the splendid trophy to winning captain Macky. Pat was heard mumbling in the background, that next year it would only be a three shot start for the 'non bowlers' from the rugby club.

Rink scores (Bowling Club first) were:

S. Meads, A. Hooper, H. Meads, D. Spencer 20; J. Baskey, D. Lewis, L. Brace, G. Cavell 19.

W. Crockford, C. Davies, B. Barnikel, J. Webb 18; C. Page, B. Jones, I. Thomas, A. Brace 18.

S. Askew, C. Roberts, D. Watkins, P. Currie 19; D. Brace, B. Coumes, M. Brace 21.
