FIVE ARCHES LADIES 42

TENBY LADIES 37

One of the hotly contested matches of the season for the ladies of the club is always the local derby between Tenby and the Five Arches.

With both teams so far this season experiencing mixed fortunes in the league, both were hoping for success when they met at the Sutton Street green last Wednesday afternoon.

On this occasion, it was the Arches who took the honours, winning by five shots and adding a further four points to their tally.

Five Arches skip Chris Morgan and her rink were 13-6 up against Mair Marquiss at 10 ends. They managed to maintain their lead throughout the second half to win 24-15.

Vera Williams and her quartet had a tough game with Joan Dorling and company.

The teams were level 18-all on the 18th end, but the Tenby rink finished strongest, picking up four shots over the remaining three ends to clinch a 22-18 victory and two points for their team.

Rink scores (Arches first):

P. Stubbs, R. Silcox, H. Baggott, C. Morgan 25; T. Brace, L. Evans, M. Morris, M. Marquiss 15.

SCHOOLS COACHING

The club is very pleased to announce that to assist us in the schools coaching programme, we have been able to purchase six bowls target diamonds at a cost of £150.

We are grateful for the generous donations made by an unnamed local benefactor, also to Mrs. Gladys Grey, Mrs. Mair Marquiss and Mrs. Edwards, the daughter of a well known Tenby bowler, the late Crofton John, a dual winner of the Tenby club's top trophies, the Gold and Silver cups.

Our sincere thanks to all. I am sure the children will enjoy the challenge of target bowls.

TENBY 93 (12)

FIVE ARCHES 51 (2)

Last Saturday, the Jones and Jones Tenby team played the Stena Five Arches. Having lost the previous weekend, the team were eager to make amends and gain a good points total.

On a very slick green, the team got off to a good start, with Simon Evans and his rink totally dominating Keith Hubbard's foursome, leading 20-1 after eight ends, with Ian Badham in good form and well supported by John Webb and DKT. Simon eventually won 30-12.

Paul Diment drew Roy Powling and his rink, which on paper was probably the Arches' strongest, but with Paul Mearns and Peter Hooper playing well and John Baggot and Paul keeping things tight, it was easy to see why this rink has only lost one game out of eight this season. They restricted the Arches to just seven singles while scoring 26 shots themselves.

On rink one, Dave Morgan was up against Ray Holly, who was after revenge after a heavy defeat against Dave and the boys two weeks earlier. But Dai Spencer, Ben Owens, Andrew Muskett and Dave had other ideas, winning 19-10, with Dai S and Ben in particularly good form.

The Arches were to get a winning rink, though, when Sam McNeilly defeated Pat Currie. Despite Peter and Terry having tidy games, the rink struggled at times, winning only one of the last five ends, and Dave Rice and Mac just shaded Sparky and Pat near the end as they lost 18-22.

So another 12 points for the team to keep them at the top of the league. This weekend we play New Dock from the Llanelli area in the Carruthers Shield.

Rink scores (Tenby first):

D. Spencer, B. Owens, A. Muskett, D. Morgan 19; D. Silcox, L. Richards, A. Grimbaldeston, R. Holly 10.

P. Mearns, P. Hooper, J. Baggot, P. Diment 26; N. Dickinson, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 7.

I. Badham, J. Webb, D. King Thomas, S. Evans 30; R. Hurlow, P. Watkins, J. Tyler, K. Hubbard 12.

P. Day, T. Preston, M. Williams, P. Currie 18; M. Donoghue, R. Hughes, D. Rice, S. McNeilly 22.

STENA FIVE ARCHES 75 (10 pts) HAVERFORDWEST 67 (4 pts)

The double over last year's league champions was more than the Arches could ever have dreamt they would do when they were promoted this season.

It was nip and tuck all the way, except for the powerful Roy Powling rink, who once again laid the foundation of the seasiders' victory with a big 17-shot win over John Docherty.

With the other rinks all fairly close, the Arches team knew they had the 'buffer' of Roy's big win to work with.

A determined fightback over the last few ends by Mike and his crew saw a difference of only three shots in the end to a good Peter Jenkins rink.

Ray Holly had a rare old tussle with Roy Fairhurst and his men to squeak home by one shot. Doug Silcox continued his run of good form.

It was the middle of the game that was the undoing of Sam McNeilly's rink when the visitors opened up an eight-shot difference, but they clawed back some respectability in the later stages to go down by seven shots.

This win has certainly opened up the championship for the other would-be contenders to take the crown from the Harfat side.

The Arches are sponsored by Stena Line.

Rink scores (Arches first, Haverfordwest skips only):

R. Hurlow, J. Tyler, K. Hubbard, M. Crockford 19; P. Jenkins 22.

N. Dickinson, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 29; J. Docherty 12.

R. Hughes, P. Watkins, S. Smith, S. McNeilly 12; R. Price 19.

D. Silcox, L. Richards, A. Grimbaldeston, R. Holly 15; R. Fairhurst 14.

TENBY 95 PENCOED 135

Paying their second visit to Tenby, the visitors from the Bridgend area went home happy with a 40-plus victory in this mixed friendly.

Jock Best was up against a powerful rink and with counts of six and seven, the visitors roared away to a 20-shot win.

Bill Bailey and his rink were always in control to come home with an eight-shot win.

By the sixth end, Mike and his crew were 15 shots to two up, including two counts of five, but the Pencoed rink brought the difference down to three by the end. Meryl Cooke was in good form as lead.

It was a case of 'hard going' for Gwyn Beynon and his crew as they came across a strong visiting rink who flourished to the tune of 16 shots.

Joan Dorling, with the 'Manorbier Mafia' at second and third, was edged out by eight shots. Dave King Thomas's powerful looking foursome, despite a late recovery, were on the wrong side of six shots at the end.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Pencoed skips only):

T. Kelly, D. Watkins, A. Grimbaldeston, J. Dorling 13; R. Mellor 21.

L. Richards, J. Kelly, D. Rice, D. King Thomas 15; P. Ellis 21.

H. Meades, A. Rootes, V. James, J. Best 12; R. Elgood 32.

GOSCAR 73

ST. THOMAS (H'WEST) 89

On Thursday of last week, in a Brewers Cup match, Goscar met a very strong team in St. Thomas from Haverfordwest.

Bill Bailey's rink met a very strong rink this time and had a very bad first half. The second half after tea was closely fought, but they had lost it in the ends before tea.

Bill Best's rink, with some fine bowling, did win, but the margin was too great to win the match with one rink.

Rink scores (Goscar first, St. Thomas skips only):

R. Hine, A. Fursse, R. Thake, B. Bailey 20; P. Bus. Jenkins 32.

T. Kelly, D. Watkins, J. Taylor, J. Best 22; H. P. Davies 11.

ST. THOMAS (H'WEST) 96 GOSCAR 69

On Tuesday, at Haverfordwest, we once again met a strong team in St. Thomas.

This time they won by a much bigger margin, but with a very good display of bowling, Lewis Hilling and his crew won on their rink. Well played lads.

PEMBROKE DOCK B 72 GOSCAR 71

This Brewers Cup clash at Pembroke Dock turned out to be a close fought game, with two rinks each and only one shot separating the two sides.

Jim Taylor's and Bert Barnikel's rinks won quite well and Lewis Hilling's rink came a close second.

On the rink of Jonathon Hubbard, with a young boy of nine-years-old, Joseph Richards, they found the opposition too strong.

The raffle was won by Allison Redman and Joseph Richards, picking out their own numbers.

Rink scores (Goscar first, Pem Dock skips only):

A. Rootes, J. Richards, M. Crockford, J. Hubbard 12; B. Powell 32.

A. Fursse, J. King, R. Thake, B. Barnikel 24; J. Woods 13.

CARRUTHER'S SHIELD

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the Tenby bowlers optimistically launching their challenge for this coveted prize.

Having won their section in our county, they take on New Dock bowlers from Llanelli on the very fast Tenby green.

The visitors will no doubt be bringing their own supporters and hopefully the members of the home club, those that are not involved in bowling elsewhere, will turn out to cheer-on Tenby to victory.

There will be a buffet after the game, to which all members are invited - we're having a party.
