Sir,
I was very interested to see last week’s ‘Blast from the Past’ photo. I do not know the names of any of the children, but the adults are, from left to right: Fr. Clarke, Brother Thomas from Caldey, Fr. Stanley Vince, parish priest, Charles Mottram, Mother Scholastica, ?, Mrs. Parbury, who used to live in the Squibbs’ old house on North Cliff.
The occasion was Mr. Mottram being presented, in 1964, with a Papal Award, the Benemerenti Medal. Mr. Mottram had been organist at St. Teilo’s RC Church for 40 years, having become organist there in 1919.
I hope my letter will help to fill a few gaps. We knew Mr. Mottram very well and he taught my aunt, Gladys West, to play the organ. When Mr. Mottram became too frail, she became the main organist at St. Teilo’s and played the organ at Mr. Mottram’s funeral.
