The sun was shining for the Big Plant Sale in Narberth over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The town was a-buzz as hundreds of visitors crowded the Town Moor on Saturday for the annual Big Plant Sale run by Pembrokeshire community arts organisation, Span Arts.

Described by one visitor as 'the start of the summer social season', the Big Plant Sale is an important date on Pembrokeshire's gardening calendar.

As well as being a hot date for the green-fingered among us with hundreds of different plant varieties on sale, it's also a wonderful community event for all the family, featuring an acoustic stage, a selection of home-cooked food, and entertainment for the kids in the form of a bouncy castles, fairground rides, and face painting enjoyed by all ages!

In addition to being a great social occasion, The Big Plant Sale acts as an essential fundraiser for Span Arts' programme of community arts, events and workshops. While the final figures are not yet in, the day looks to have raised nearly £4,000 from door donations, pitch fees, food sales, and The Big Green Raffle.

All proceeds from the day go back into running the Plant Sale, as well as supporting Span Arts' diverse programme of events and workshops, which target the 'hard to reach' in the community.

Added to the events at the Queens Hall, the annual A Cappella Festival and open air theatre at Lampeter House, Span Arts also delivers workshops to 'at risk' teenagers, including Visual Arts workshops in the Autistic Unit in Pembroke School and Cornerstone Unit at Pembrokeshire College for students with learning disabilities; Visual and Digital Arts workshops in youth centres across Pembrokeshire; and music workshops in the Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) in Neyland, Penally and Pembroke.

In Span Arts' remit to support emerging artists, the acoustic stage was host to a diverse programme of musicians during the day, including local singer-songwriters Elly Sinnett, Cathy Jewson, and Gil Gillespie.

It was also followed by the fantastic PRU band - The Proof - a group of performers from Neyland PRU who take part in the music workshops, as part of the Arts Council of Wales funded project run by Span Arts and singer Molara Awen.

The Big Green Raffle was this year supported by Bluestone's Blue Lagoon, Vincent Davies, Folly Farm, Upton Castle, Ffos Las Races, Water Margins Aquatic Plant Nursery, and The Span Arts Comedy Club, which gave away a year's pass to its monthly comedy night at the Queens Hall.
