An array of floats, walkers and gleaming historical vehicles of all description took part in the Begelly, Kilgetty Fun Day last Saturday (writes Kath Breen, of Begelly/Kilgetty Community Association Carnival Committee). Crowds of people turned out to see the Bulldog Parade of Vehicles' slow procession through the village, led by Mr. Trevor Lewis in his superb 1929 Rolls Royce, followed by a selection of cars, motorbikes and tractors. These assembled on the Kingsmoor Sports Field to be inspected more closely by vehicle enthusiasts. Thanks go to all the owners who took the time to show their wonderful vehicles. Children's entertainment, local craft and charity stalls, Tattoo Tent, Snake Man, The Begelly Kilgetty Environmental Group Tea Tent serving delicious home-made cakes and 'cuppas' and also other refreshments on the field, kept people interested until the commencement of the late afternoon carnival. After the police escort came the newly-formed Village Comedy Band leading the procession, followed by the Carnival Queen, Miss Natasha Evans, and her attendant, Miss Gabrielle Butler, both looking delightful sitting in a 1913 Sunbeam vintage car, owned and kindly driven by Mr. Simon Carter. Then came the floats, ranging from 'Last of the Summer Wine' and 'Willie Wonka and his Chocolate Factory' to 'Nursery Rhymes and Tales' and 'Del Boy and Rodney' in the Trotters' Robin Reliant, and a wonderful selection of colourful walkers. Some of the costumes must have taken a long time to create, some probably minutes! Thanks to all who took part. The carnival judges, Mrs. Ann Pugh and Michelle and Nancy Stafford, had the difficult task of selecting winners from the different categories, but eventually reached the following decisions: Best child aged four years and under: Bob the Builder (Evan Carter). Best child aged five to eight: Jelly Fish (Charley Reohorn). Best child aged nine to 11: Barnum's Dog Circus (Lottie Anderson). Best child 12 years plus: 141 Days to Xmas (Terrine Lewis and Gang). Best group: Star Wars (Penny, Paul German and family, Nicci and Ross Hurse, Ben and Aux Thomas, Matthew Lewis and Kylie Marsh). Best float: Willie Wonka and His Chocolate Factory (Sorry no names, but you know who you are!). A raffle was also held in conjunction with the carnival and winners were: £50 - Terrine Lewis; £30 - Mrs. Roden; £15 - Mrs. A. Phillips; £5 - Mrs. Hazel Johns. A disco was held in the Kingsmoor Sports Club House for the evening entertainment and revellers were surprised to see two local 'Big Kids', Noddy and Big Ears, turn up to take part as the DJs - their antics had everyone in fits of laughter! The 'Grand Firework Finale' by West Coast Fireworks, of Narberth, lit up the skies when the Carnival Queen and her attendant jointly pressed the remote control to start the action, spot on 10 pm. The carnival committee would like to thank all the sponsors, marshals, carnival judges, police, Four Seasons, of Kilgetty for supplying the beautiful bouquets and buttonholes for the Carnival Queen, attendant and judges, Mr. Neil Jackson for crowning the Carnival Queen and also being with Mr. Tom Price and providing the music and commentary for the day's event. Lastly, we would like to thank the Kingsmoor Sports Club for the use of their field, which was an ideal setting for our Day of Fun. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves, we, the carnival committee, certainly did!
