Fresh concerns over road safety throughout the village of Kilgetty have been raised by a local county councillor.
Two matters concerning safety were raised by County Councillor for the ward Cllr Alistair Cameron at a recent meeting of Kilgetty and Begelly Community Council.
One was the matter of the school crossing patrol on Carmarthen Road being discontinued; whilst an incident involving a pedestrian being knocked over by a vehicle reversing out of the parking area in front of Kilgetty Pharmacy was also highlighted.
Cllr Cameron stated: “Unfortunately, Pembrokeshire County Council is discontinuing the school crossing patrol in Carmarthen Road due to it not meeting the national criteria.
“The Head Teacher has informed me that the school only allows Years 5 and 6 pupils to walk home alone and then only if they have their parents’ consent.
“I have had ongoing concerns about speeding vehicles along this part of Carmarthen Road.
“Previous speed surveys carried out by the county council have indicated there is not a problem, but some residents have expressed concerns to me about speeding.
“I have therefore asked the County Council to look at this again. I have also asked the police if their mobile speeding cameras can be utilised for a period of time at this road which is subject to a 20-mph restriction,” he continued.
A lady who had been hit by a vehicle trying to reverse out of the spaces at the front of the pharmacy in November, had also contacted Cllr Cameron over the incident.
Sharing her account on the ‘Kilgetty, Begelly, Stepaside and Pentlepoir Community Voice group on Facebook, following the incident, the sixty-nine-year-old woman stated: “As I was walking past the chemist with my little dog, I noticed a car’s reversing lights come on and it started to move back towards me. I tried to get out of the way quickly, but fell right behind the car.

“The driver still had not noticed me. I tried to wave my arm high so that the driver would notice me and stop before running me over. I was now looking at the underside of the car as it came towards me.
“Thankfully a lady coming down the road from the bridge had stopped her car and quickly came to my aid.
“This is a serious risk of someone being very badly hurt. I just hope no one else gets hurt in a similar situation.”
Cllr Cameron said that he was sorry to hear about this very ‘distressing incident’, and would be taking such matters up with the Highways Department, as he believed that road safety in this area needed to be investigated.
“You should always reverse into this parking area so that you can drive frontwards out of it, and you can see in front of you when you are coming out. I have taken this issue up with the County Council,” remarked Cllr Cameron.
“We need clear signage to reverse into this parking area, and we need to look at road safety in the whole of this area.”
