If music be the food of love, Phil Thompson doesn't need to wait for the Pembroke Festival! Surrounded by banners and beauties it's the last call for Phil Thompson, Texaco's public affairs adviser, before he marries. Texaco is Pembroke Festival's principal sponsor, and the double-entendre made Phil smile as he joined the ladies to show off their efforts at making the towns new 2004 banners. Phil won't be here for the festival's varied musical programme, but he wished it every success. The week starts with a grand opening ceremony tonight ( Friday) at 6 pm at the Castle Gates. Inside the castle, a talented group of young musicians from Pembroke School, known as 'Suburban Soul' will play a mix of 60s and 70s soul classics. Cheese, wine, Morris Dancers, the Pibau Preseli Pipe Band and Circus Malarkey are also part of the free festive opening party. Tomorrow (Saturday), the castle hosts a Medieval Supper with La Volta, plus East End Flyover Company's humorous excerpt from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. In addition, the Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir perform at the Tabernacle. Monday is 'Fiddle Day'. Finalists of the first Welsh Celtic Fiddle Competition will take to the castle stage for judging. In between, the Under 16 class and the Open, ceilidh band 'Redwing' will perform. The big named band for this year's festival is 'The Hamsters'. Local blues stars 'Cottonmouth' will be the support band for this 'Castle R&B' night on September 11, at 8 pm. Tickets are still available at Pembroke Bookshop, Main Street. (Cards accepted on 01646 685144). Other names to tempt music fans throughout the festival week are talented singer/songwriter Jess Ward, John Rodge, 'The Buzzards', 'Brother Vegetable', Al Davey, pianist Clive Raymond, Paddy Milner and 'The Numbers Racket'. From Thursday onwards, there's Tom and Mike Chant, and a rock night at the castle with 'Elephant Gerald', 'The Rainkings' and 'The Afternoons'. Next Friday, Pembroke Town Hall has a big band swing night with 'The Merlinaires', while on Saturday lunchtime, check out Arni Cotterill. On the same night, in a pagan vein, check the programme for Jim Fox - talented singer, musician and songwriter of Irish and Celtic songs. The two 'Commotion on the Commons' days are this Sunday and Saturday, September 11. The whole week culminates with the grand finale on Sunday, September 11, when a colourful procession of banners and lanterns wends its way from Monkton Priory Church to The Commons where a rousing party will be in full swing with bands 'Mo Jazz' and 'Celtic Spirit'. There will be lots of stalls and refreshments, while topping off this fun night will be a spectacular pyrotechnic display. Tickets for the events are available from Pembroke Book Shop, 73 Main Street. (Booking by Card 01646 685 144).
