Sir, I was astonished and upset to read in last week’s Tenby Observer that the Town Council were considering ‘shifting’, as they put it, the skatepark and its possible extension to a tranquil park in a residential area known as Battery Gardens.
As one of those residents who lives next door to the park, I would have serious objections to such a plan. The park is a quiet haven for local elderly residents to meet on a sunny afternoon and sit chatting and admiring the views over to Caldey, South Beach and the Golf Course.
Many other people visit the park, from families enjoying a picnic there in the summer to anyone who would like to sit in a peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of town or the beaches. It’s a perfect spot to take a book and sit out and enjoy a bit of reading and the only place accessible to my 92-year-old dad who enjoys a regular aftenoon stroll ‘around the track’ of paths with the aid of his walker, unable to venture much further on level ground due to very poor eyesight and hearing.
I consider this to be a totally unsuitable place to suggest moving the skatepark to and wonder how many local residents, many of whom live alone, would feel very isolated if this park was taken over by a younger generation who have multiple options to entertain themselves, including using the present skatepark, which is perfectly adequate in my opinion and very noisy when I walk past, so would disturb people living in a residential road if it were to be re-located to Battery Gardens.
