Welcome to the world of artist Dorian Spencer Davies - a warm and optimistic world, bright and attractive, filled with boats and harbours, castles and light houses, curved into rounded shapes and friendly forms under sun or moonlight. New paintings will fill the White Lion Street Gallery in Tenby in July.
The artist's work is instantly recognisable; deceptively 'simple', but based on a thorough grounding in drawing and illustration, acute observation and judicious choice of detail. Complex townscapes may be underpinned by a series of invisible arcs, allowing 'space' between elements of the painting so that it works as a landscape rather than as a flat design. Different watercolour techniques are used to achieve a variety of textures and light effects.
Though an admirer of the work of the late artist Alfred Wallis, Dorian's work is not naive. It is a carefully constructed and deliberate style that he has developed and changed over the years. His subject matter is all around him in the Pembrokeshire landscape and coastline, the county in which he was born and brought up.
After studying in Carmarthenshire, Dorian worked for several well-known book publishers eventually settling with Dolan-Kindersley as senior art editor for their children's book division.
Returning to Wales in the later '90s, Dorian devoted his time entirely to painting. Originally based in Newport, but now in Tenby, he supplies work for a number of coastal galleries, exhibits solely and with others in larger venues and undertakes special commissions. Beloved houses, favourite spots along the coast and sites of marriage proposals get the DSD treatment and become unique presents for weddings, anniversaries, retirements and other happy occasions.
About 50 original paintings celebrating Pembrokeshire will be shown. The exhibition, 'The Originals 2013', starts July 1 and continues until 28th.
Dorian Spencer Davies will be in the gallery to meet visitors on Saturday, July 6, from 2 until 4 pm. Everyone is invited to come and meet him.
The White Lion Street Gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm every day, except for Wednesdays.
