The sun shone on Amroth on Sunday as the popular sea-front village staged its second annual community carnival.

The carnival attracted a wide range of imaginative entries, while crowds from throughout the area filled every vantage point from Summerhill to the New Inn to watch the colourful cavalcade and join in the festivities.

The day was jam-packed with a host of varied activities, kicking off with a sandcastle competition on the beach.

Winners were Kate, Lucy, Rachel and Leah Evans, with 'Skull Island'. Second place went to Christine and David Ralphs, with St. Catherine's Island, and third were Rita, Lena and Elinor, with Tigel Castle.

Local band 8Ball were on stage outside the Amroth Arms, cranking up the party atmosphere, before all eyes turned to the main road at 3 pm when the carnival parade wound its way along the sea-front.

One of the most eye-catching floats, heading the front of the procession, was that of pretty Carnival Queen Kaylee James and her attendants Cherie Morgan and Frankie Owen.

Familiar fairytale characters mixed with topical personalities and television favourites as the floats and walking entries processed through the village, presenting the judges, BBC Wales newsreader Jayne Case, Mr. Terry Howells and Mr. Jerry Williams, with an unenviable task in selecting the winners.

It seemed that every mode of transport had been employed by people eager to join in the fun. Even Swansea City's infamous mascot, Cyril the Swan, put in an appearance, which delighted the crowds - as did the humorous commentary provided by compere Wynne Evans.

And Wynne did not have to make sure that everyone was 'listening very carefully', to reveal that top prize in the lorry borne class went to Amroth's version of Allo Allo, while the spirit of Mardi Gras enjoyed in 'New (Inn) Orleans' earned them second place. Third place went to the Victorian bathers from the Rotary Club of Narberth.

Top prize in the group entry went to the Flirtatious Ascot Fillies. Second was Peter Pan, while third was Free Love in Amroth.

Winner of the best child, scooping the Griffiths Cup, generously donated for this year by Mr. Rex Griffiths, was Leanna Davies as a Flower Girl. Second was Elliot Watson as Captain Hook, while third was two-year-old Reagan Dunn as a baby Jester.

Winner of the best adult entry was Nicola Griffiths as Helga from Allo Allo. Second was Jean Morgan as Merlin the magician and third was Senga Waddilove as an Ascot Lady.

A special award was also made to the Amroth Crusaders.

During the day, judging also took place in the children's painting competition, with results being:

Under 7 - 1. Jake Proctor; 2. Jake Owen; joint 3. Jody Cullen with Rachel Johns.

Under 12 - 1. Adam Thomas; 2. Sarah Foster; 3. Emily Hamen.

Under 15 - 1. Alexandra Powell; 2. Amy Stephens.

Overall winner was Jake Proctor.

Following the judging and prize-giving, entertainment continued with children's races, a breathtaking aerobatics display, and more live music, before the day-long festival culminated in a grand firework display.
