Carnival week in Amroth got off to a flying start on Sunday. The weather was glorious and the village was abuzz with activity. Holidaymakers and locals alike savoured the happy relaxed atmosphere, which lasted from 10 am in the morning until 11 pm at night. Clr. Tony Brinsden, chairman of the community council, opened the proceedings and the day commenced with the sandcastle competition. Winners were: Children's Section - 1. Daisy, Cara and Amber from New Inn Caravan Park; 2. Megan, Nel and Rhiannon from Sulley, Penarth. Family Section: 1. Ben Watts, Matthew Smith, Ian Watts, Lyndsey Watts, from Cresselly; 2. Buller family, from Gothborne; 3. Hughes family, from Llanteg. The colourful carnival procession this year had an impressive 11 floats, the standard of which was very high and one sympathises with some of the participants who must have shed several pounds as they sweltered in their costumes! Winners were: Best Large Float: 1. Short Cutz (Shrek); 2. Narberth and Whitland Rotary (Summer Holiday). Small Floats: 1. Summerhill Carnival Group; 2. Narberth Wild West (Party Toons); 3. New Inn Caravan Park (Blazing Paddles). The fun continued with the tug-of-war, while later, the evening activities commenced with an excellent stunt aeroplane display. This was followed by a disco and live music provided by Matt Stone and Meat Loaf tribute. A spectacular firework display rounded off a magical evening and a fun-filled day. Amroth Community Carnival not only raises money for charity, but it is also doing its part to support tourism. There has been a full and varied programme of activities throughout the week - quiz, concerts and live music events. The entertainment continues tonight (Friday), with live music at the Temple Bar and concludes tomorrow (Saturday) with the charity pram push. Monies raised from the week's activities will be donated to local charities, in particular Air Ambulance Wales and Tenby Lifeboat. In the last 12 months, this small seaside village has raised over £11,500 for charity. Although the carnival week has been a resounding success, it also has a tinge of sadness because this was Clr. Wynne Evans's last one as master of ceremonies - a task he has performed admirably in recent years. The committee are extremely grateful to him for all the support and advice he has given them and wish him well in his new role as a county councillor.
