There was a good turnout for the New Year's Day swim at Amroth. The cold and frost did nothing to deter the Amazons who braved the waves. In fact, it was warmer in than out and the long trek to the waves was worse than the actual dip itself. This year the revellers were joined by supporters from Narberth who were entering the briny for the first time.
For two people it was not even their first dip of the day. Tom Wilson and Dilwyn Davies challenged each other to complete all three swims on New Year's Day. So they started at Wiseman's Bridge, proceeded to Saundersfoot and finished at Amroth. Judging by the way a certain person's hands were shaking as he held his mulled wine (sometime after the swim), one suspects that the comment he made that it was the first and last time could be accurate.
Since they both won their bet, they decided to donate their wagers to the charity fund, which benefited to the tune of £200. Thanks must also go to their chauffeur, Nigel Davies, who ensured they made their tight schedule and achieved their objective.
Congratulations also to the Withybush paramedics alias Sally Baker, Sally Lawrence, Lianne Lawrence, Winnie Tunster and Laura Waddilove who won first prize in the fancy dress.
Thanks must be extended to mine hosts, Jane and Roger Harries, of the Amroth Arms, who provided a convivial atmosphere in which to relax after the swim.
All the money collected will be donated to charity. The cheques will be presented in a few weeks when all the sponsorship money has been collected. Money from the Narberth swimmers will be donated to the Noah's Ark Appeal.
