"Following the decision by Pembrokeshire County Councillor, Mary Megarry, to join the Liberal Democrats, Michael German AM, Deputy First Minister in the National Assembly for Wales, visited the Amroth ward on Wednesday to meet with Clr. Megarry and welcome her.

Clr. Megarry, who resigned from the Conservative Party at the weekend, met Mr. German in Llanteg to discuss the problems with the A477 trunk road and how they were being alleviated with the introduction of speed limits through the village, but highlighting the problems caused along the trunk road by traffic to and from the ferry port at Pembroke Dock.

They then moved on to the Stepaside Heritage Park, of which Clr. Megarry is chairman of a steering group looking into community involvement in the future of this prestigious site.

Mr. German was pleased to hear of the degree of interest from the community and their aspirations for the site.

"The need for community regeneration and involvement to be recognised at all levels was one of the main reasons for my decision to join the Liberal Democrats," said Clr. Megarry, who was elected in 1999 by the Amroth Ward.

Her move to the Liberal Democrats now means that there are no Conservative county councillors on Pembrokeshire County Council, following the move by three councillors to the Independent Group last summer.
