On Sunday afternoon, about 25 volunteers from the local community gathered on Amroth beach to carry out the first beach-clean.

They were supported by Mari Williams from Keep Wales Tidy as part of the Tidy Towns initiative who brought along all the collecting gear.

Fortunately, it was a beautiful sunny afternoon and the task was carried out with a great sense of camaraderie.

Despite the beach appearing relatively clean at first glance, it was quite deceptive once the volunteers began collecting and at the end of two hours work, they had managed to fill over 20 black bags of litter comprising a range of different plastics - bottles, bottle tops, cigarette lighters, plastic bags and strands of multi-coloured nylon fishing rope.

All these items will not naturally decompose and are causing much damage to coastal wildlife.

The group has made an excellent start and intends to tackle another part of the beach at the next clean. This will take place on Sunday, November 2, at 2 pm, meeting by the New Inn, Amroth. All help much appreciated.
