Garden Spot FC from Pennsylvania, USA, played Tenby AFC, last weekend, as part of their Wales/ Ireland tour. The tour was organised by the Tenby club's patron, Gordon Hill, the ex-Manchester United and England winger, and consisted of four matches in Wales and one in Ireland, as well as visits to Old Trafford and to London. The party of 50 players and supporters arrived in Tenby on Sunday morning, visiting the town centre before having lunch at the Broadmead Hotel, courtesy of Gary and Marlene Helmich. Three matches were scheduled for the afternoon, girls Under 16s and boys Under 15s and 17s. Mr. Hill's information that the Americans weren't particularly good (which proved a slight inaccuracy) prompted the home side to provide much younger opposition. All matches were played in a three times 20-minute format. In the girls match, a Tenby XI put in a good performance, with several girls playing their first ever 11-a-side game. But the superior strength, fitness and skill factor was just too much for the local side, with Garden Spot running out 8-1 winners, The Tenby XI scored a consolation goal when Holly Cloake and Hannah Lewis combined well, with Lewis slotting the ball into the back of the net after the visiting 'keeper parried Cloake's shot. After the match it was revealed that the Americans had beaten Cardiff City, Swansea City and Maesteg Under 16s prior to this game. Tenby XI: Ffion Ashman, Jodie Fecci, Gracie Bevan, Sophie Izzard, Kristen Clark, Lauren Clark, Hannah Lewis, Rhianne Griffiths, Darcy Escott, Nia Thomas, Holly Cloake, Maisie John. The next match saw Tenby Under 14s play Garden Spot Under 15s in the match of the day. The Seasiders went two-nil up thanks to goals from Jordan Richards and new signing Ashley Andrews during the first 20 minutes. They increased their lead in the second period when another new signing, Courtney Harland, headed home from close range and could have gone further ahead, after Richards hit the crossbar and Rob Fairlie's shot was cleared off the line. The final third belonged to the Americans and they were rewarded with a consolation goal via a penalty in the dying minutes. Tenby U14s: Jake Roberts, Dan Edwards, Curtis Hurlow, Patrick Elliott, Greg Lees-Griffiths, Ashley Smith, Jordan Richards, Aaron Roberts, Ashley Andrews, Will Thomas, Alex Heesom, Phil Horsley, Courtney Harland, Rob Fairlie. The final match saw Tenby Under 15s struggle against Garden Spot Under 17s who, like the girls, were much bigger, stronger and fitter. However, it must be said that the home side hadn't played at all last season. Tenby took the lead through the inspirational Daryl Mansbridge, but the Americans struck back with four goals of their own. Tenby U15s: Richard Bridges, Tom Powell, James Howes, Sam Ormond, Joe Richards, Luke Hamilton, Daryl Mansbridge, Tom Nicholas, Alan Townsend, Ross Gray, Tom Baker, Rhys Hewson. Tenby AFC are grateful to Angela Nicholls, Dene Hurlow, Charles Davies, Chris Fairlie, Andrew Rees (food sponsor) and anyone else who helped to make it a memorable day for the Americans.
