A local sportsman has celebrated the third anniversary of a lifesaving transplant by running one of the UK’s biggest and best road races on an iconic course around Wales’ capital city.
Adam Hughes and his girlfriend, Sabrina Revell, successfully crossed the finishing line of Sunday’s Cardiff half marathon in one hour 42 minutes.
The pair were raising funds for Kidney Wales after Adam underwent a kidney transplant in 2014.
At the age of 25, the popular football and cricket player was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure following a high blood pressure reading at the doctors’ surgery. For nearly two years, he was on 10 hours’ dialysis a night while on the kidney transplant list. When the call eventually came that a potentially-suitable kidney was available, Adam was rushed into hospital and underwent surgery.
Now living and working in Cardiff, Adam is back to full fitness and ran the Tenby 10k in the summer, before deciding to sign up for his first half marathon.
“It was a tough first three miles being caught up in all the traffic, but I’m chuffed with my time of 1:42:25 on my first Cardiff Half Marathon,” said Adam.
“It was a fantastic event and running for a great cause with Kidney Wales nearing the three-year anniversary of my transplant.”
Adam and Bree have so far collected over £700 for Kidney Wales who help patients and families with renal problems in Wales.
“Huge thank to everyone who has already sponsored us online and in person,” said Adam.
