It's been an action-packed few months for Tenby Aces.
After the Long Course weekend back in June, a few of the Aces were still in training for Ironman Wales in October.
The rest of the club were focusing on other events, such as sportives, racing, time trialing and triathlons. The rest of us were just enjoying the club rides and, although the weather wasn't great, it didn't stop the Tuesday and Thursday rides being well attended.
On Sunday, July 31, there was the Tenby 10K, which proved to be a great event. Mike Smith and Nicola Coates represented the Aces on the day and did the club proud.
Gareth Rees completed the Tenby Go-Tri event, John and James Shuttleworth tackled triathlon events further afield and Daryl Cavill entered the Tour Of the Peaks in August, coming eighth overall in a field of around 370.
Then, after much anticipation, it arrived - Ironman Wales.
September 11, 2011, will be a day some members of the Aces will remember for the rest of their lives, along with many of the competitors.
With the weather forecast looking okay and the swim being transferred to North Beach, spirits were high.
Carlton Coates, Paul Slack, Ian Vickery, Jonathan Lacey, and Chris Spowart represented the Aces, along with Neil Morgan, Dave Hawkins, Nicky Rees and Kevin Goldsworthy who also entered.
All but one of the aforementioned names completed this gruelling challenge, with Kevin narrowly missing out on the cycle leg.
He's not let it get to him, though, as he's already entered for 2012, along with the club's very own Janina Evans, Nicola Coates, Nigel Merrony and the many others inspired by the event.
At the time of writing this, it would be easier to say who in Tenby hasn't been inspired to sign up for the 2012 Ironman Wales.
It was a fantastic day and all credit must go the organisers for pulling off this major event.
Well-done and thankyou to Matthew Evans and the rest of the team for bringing this fantastic event to Tenby.
The week after Ironman, Helen Roberts organised a trip for Aces to Rhayader.
This proved to be a relaxing weekend, which was great news for Carlton, having completed the Ironman the previous week.
It was rumoured there was far more drinking than cycling going on though, especially from Mr. Currie and Mr. Rees, who represent Wales in this discipline!
It may also have been in Rhayader that Helen (or Hyacinth as the Aces like to call her) came up with her idea to make the Aces a smarter, more elegant club, showing one how to project one's self in a positive manner, and dress accordingly.
Alas, her only failing in this quest to date being her husband, Steve 'pretty mouth' Roberts, who still lives in the fashion glory days of Auf Wiedersehen Pet!
The final event of the year was the Autumn Epic.
This is a gruelling sportive known for its steep climbs and bad weather (riding through water up to your knees!), but for once the weather was good.
Mike Smith, Shaun Griffiths, Helen and Steve Roberts Dai Lewis and his son Ryan represented the club, with Dai, Shaun and Ryan all achieving silver in the results.
Gareth Rees entered the Etape Cymru at the beginning of October.
He said it had some of the steepest climbs he had ever ridden up and could see people pushing their bikes up them in tears.
But now it's back to winter training and the cold, wet weather to look forward to.
The Tuesday and Thursday evening rides have come to an end until March/April next year, but the Sunday morning rides carry on as normal.
These are generally longer, steadier rides, providing good base training for the coming months.
The Tuesday and Thursday rides have now been replaced by turbo training sessions held at Tenby Bowling Club.
They start at 7 pm at a cost of £2 per session and run from now until the end of March.
Anyone thinking of taking up cycling, already cycling and wanting to keep your fitness up over the winter or on a grander scale, aiming for the Ironman, this is a great way to start.
All are welcome, from beginners to advanced (as long as you have a road bike), and if interested in coming along, please contact Jon on 07817 029997 for more information.
Next for the Aces is the annual Christmas Party and awards night.
This is being held on Saturday, December 17, at the Giltar Hotel, Tenby, at a cost of £19.95 per person.
If you wish to attend, please contact Nicola on 07932 791841 or call the Giltar on 01834 842507.
As you can see, up to now the club has had an eventful year, and hopefully this will continue into 2012.
There are lots of great events coming up next year, especially local ones such as The Daffodil sportive in February, held in Pendine, the Carten100 ride (Cardiff to Tenby) in May, the Long Course Weekend in June and of course, Ironman Wales again.
If you're thinking of entering any of these, then now's the time to start training.
The Aces will be more than willing to help in anyway they can and always welcome new members.
