Sir,
The photograph of Bertie and Peggy Page on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary sent my mind back to the mid/late 1930s and Tenby harbour. We knew, automatically it seemed, when the summer mid-evening would bring with it a reasonably full tide. The harbour lads would be there swimming, plenty of good fun and - above all - the chance that Bertie would turn up to dive.
At that time, adjacent to the harbour steps of the old pier, we had a 'proper' crane. That would be the centre of our attraction. Bertie would shin up the jib - apparently effortlessly - stand on top of it and diving would commence. Local families, visiting families suddenly appeared to watch and be amazed at his sheer ability.
Nothing of the event was contrived, nothing was rigged. Bertie was just a natural and wonderful athlete, his diving was equally inborn. My thanks to him for all the pleasure and inspiration he gave us, the wonderful image of Tenby that he left in the minds of these who watched him. Very many thanks to Peggy for looking after him so well!
