LOYAL and committed fund-raiser, Mrs. Joyce Mawdsley, of Tenby, has been volunteering her time for Cancer Research UK for 30 years now, and her dedication was recognised on Friday - on the occasion of her 89th birthday! Joyce originally started volunteering when she joined the local fund-raising committee in 1975, then known as Cancer Research Campaign. At that time, the committee used to sell bits and pieces from someone's front room! Fifteen years ago, in 1990, the charity opened their shop at Brecknock House, Tudor Square, Tenby, and Joyce has volunteered there every since. The beginning of 2002 was an exciting time for her, as the charity merged with Imperial Cancer Research Fund, becoming Cancer Research UK in February and then in April, Joyce, together with fellow Tenby volunteer Mrs. Annie Badland, were invited to Buckingham Palace to meet Her Majesty The Queen as part of a special birthday party. Tenby shop manager Julia King Thomas said: "Joyce has been a staunch supporter of the charity for 30 years now and is an inspiration to us all. She usually likes to work on the till, chatting to the customers and helping people browsing, but she's so kind-hearted and dedicated that if I'm ever short-staffed, I know that I can just call her and she'll come to my rescue!"
