Vandals who targeted memorial benches in Tenby have been dealt with in court, local councillors were informed this week.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, the town clerk, Andrew Davies, told members that two males had recently appeared in court charged with damaging two benches in the town over the summer.
“One memorial bench was actually removed from Castle Hill and used to build a bonfire!” Mr. Davies explained.
“Police caught the persons involved and they appeared in court recently, with one culprit actually getting jail time, and the other given a community order,” he continued, explaining that both defendants had been ordered to pay compensation, one of £1,000 and the other £500.
Mr. Davies said that understandably one of the families was upset to discover what had happened to their memorial bench when they visited the town over the summer.
“I explained to them that there was a court case pending. Now we have to decide whether to replace the bench now or wait for the compensation to come through,” he added.
Councillors agreed that they should wait until the compensation costs came through before replacing the benches.
