Last Saturday, Whitland Seconds travelled to St. Davids for a friendly match.
Whitland started the stronger side, scoring the opening try after five minutes when outside-half Shane Morgan went around his opposite number, chipped the last defender and won the race for the touch down.
The try was converted by Liam Price.
The second try followed soon after when centre Price chased the ball after he had kicked through a dropped pass, scoring a try which he converted to take the score to 14-nil.
Good awareness allowed Whitland blindside flanker Lewis Owen to score after he had supported some excellent work in midfield from Morgan and Price
The final try of the first half came after Whitland took a quick tap penalty in their own 22-metre area. After the initial break, a long kick was sent down field, allowing speedster Courtney Bowan, playing on the right wing, to regather the ball and dive over the line.
Both tries were converted by Price to take the half-time score to 26-nil.
The second half started the same, with Whitland attacking at every opportunity, and after strong break from Price, who popped the ball to left wing Aled Davies, he in turn put impressive number 10 Shane Morgan in to score.
With the visitors' backs now running the game, St. Davids' forwards, led by robust stalwart Jack Dudley, decided to keep the ball tight with a series of driving rucks and, indeed, they were very unlucky that when they did eventually get over the line to score, referee Colin Kaijaks, who was unsighted, only awarded them an attacking scrum.
The home side continued to press, winning a number of penalties and camping on the visitors' try line, but outstanding defence from Whitland, led by youth player William Ebsworth, somehow kept them out.
An injury to Dudley, who was forced to leave the field, allowed Whitland time to regroup and clear their line.
The crowd who were enjoying the game in the warm winter sunshine were then treated to the best two tries of the afternoon, both scored by Whitland.
The first was after another youth player, Gethin Lewis, playing at tight-head prop, showed all his skill and pace, when, finding himself in midfield, he made a searing outside break. His pace surprised both opposition and team-mates alike as he found himself in open space with only one man to beat, and after the defender had committed himself to the tackle, Lewis, with text-book accuracy, passed the ball out to the supporting left wing flier, Aled Davies, who cantered in under the posts. Price dropped kicked the conversion.
The second, and final try of the afternoon for Whitland, came from the kick-off, when Morgan and Price combined to put Lewis Owen in for his second touchdown.
To their credit, St. Davids again fought back and carried the ball up to the visitors' line, where they eventually forced their way over for a consolation try, making the final score 45-7.
