Whitland played host to Castle on June 9. With it having been a really wet week, and weathermen all giving different forecasts, a nice dry sunny day was welcomed by all.
With Whitland having beaten Milford Haven the week before, they were looking to add to their league winning run.
With a close-fought game up to around 15 ends, the Whitland players showed that added bit of class towards the end to continually pick up shots and gain a much-needed 14 points with a 44-shot margin.
Rink one saw the closest game of the day with a Whitland pair of Dan Jenner and Phil Wynn looking to gain revenge for a 13-shot beating by Gareth Jones from the Carruthers game earlier in the season. Being teamed up with youngsters Mike John (17) and Charlie Morse (13), the Whitland boys showed no fear and started with positively going ahead 8-2 by the fifth end. By tea, the score had been pegged back to 10-9. The second half of the game was similarly patterned with the first 12-16th ends going to the Whitland boys to drag out a 17-11 lead. However, the Whitland rink showed great character to hold out for a well-received 18-17 victory.
Rink two had Steve Reese, his consistent lead Dave 'captain' Jenner, Bob Wood, and Huw 'Beano' Nicholas. The rink seemed to have a fairly easy time of it during the game, picking up a count of six and numerous fours. The Castle rink seemed powerless to resist the Whitland four's play. Close up until the sixth end, with the Castle rink leading 4-5, the Whitland boys stepped it up a couple of gears and never looked back eventually winning 37-12.
Rink three saw Colin Wynn and his rink of 'misfits' Robbie Burns, Ashley 'Chisel' Reese and Keith 'George' Michael. The rink gelled well once again and in playing Barry Absalom needed to. The story of the match from rink two rang true once again with a close battle up to eight ends and then the accelerator was pressed, with the Whitland four running out 24-11 victors.
Rink four contained Glyn Thomas, John Rees, Denny Richards and Henry John. Possibly being the most experienced rink on the green, the Whitland players seemed to lack a spot of inspiration up to the sixth end, then finding there feet, battled back. Not being ahead until the 10th end, the Whitland players seemed to push from tea on and recorded a 21-16 victory against Dave Summers.
The captain would like to thank the team for their efforts during the game and hopes this run of form continues for a few games to come.
Whitland have a tough fixture against Pembroke Dock tomorrow (Saturday).
Whitland Bowling Club would also like to announce there will be a BBQ on all day on county finals day, July 14. The club will be open to the general public also to come and watch the county showcase its talent.
