Communities across Wales could benefit from a proposed £30 million Government investment programme designed to create safe and accessible places to ride as part of the legacy of the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes Grand Départs in 2027.

The proposal forms part of a national call for investment in community cycling facilities that help tackle barriers to participation while improving health and wellbeing outcomes.

The investment would support facilities in communities where there is strong demand for cycling opportunities but insufficient provision to meet local need.

Supporters believe the proposal would help more people access the physical, mental and social benefits cycling can provide, while creating a visible and lasting legacy linked to the Grand Départs.

Caroline Spanton, Chief Executive Officer of Beicio Cymru, said:“The Tour de France Grand Départs in 2027 represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to inspire more people to cycle, but the real legacy will be determined by what opportunities people have to get on a bike long after the races have left Wales.”
