Tenby Utd 32 pts. Loughor 15 G. D. Harries, FBM Holidays, Andrew Price and Molson Coors sponsored Tenby United welcomed a very experienced and strong Loughor side to Heywood Lane on Saturday and even after some impressive performances in previous weeks, they were still expecting to have to work hard if they were going to continue their good start to Division One life. Other than an early Loughor penalty kicked by centre Peter Smiriglia, the majority of the first half was a tightly fought affair with no scores. Both teams looked to move the ball and with the experienced Loughor pack just taking the edge up front, it was the Tenby backs that were the more dominant behind and both teams went at each other with aggression and determination and it seemed as though the game would go right down to the wire and you wouldn't get so much as a cigarette paper between them all day. With the hard fought and evenly contested first half entering its final stages, the now frustrated and tiring Loughor pack were relentlessly trying everything in their arsenal to break through the tight Seasiders' defence and, having worked so hard to reach the Tenby five-metre line, the visitors were now beginning to lose ground and the heavy tackling that the Tenby side pride themselves on was beginning to turn the tables, and reward for their defensive efforts was not far away. After hard working United flanker Jason Ronowitz turned the ball over and scrum-half and stand-in skipper Will Crockford moved it away from the forward battle, talented young outside-half and man-of-the-match, Ashley Sutton, who was with the Seasiders on permit from Narberth, was able to clear his lines with the kick. The strong, gusting Heywood Lane breeze prevented the ball finding the safety of touch, but this mattered little as Sutton had followed his kick and before the would-be Loughor catcher knew what was happening, Sutton had regathered the ball on the Tenby 22 metre line and cantered in, outstripping the entire visiting defence for a brilliant individual effort, to which he added the conversion and gave his adopted side the half-time lead of seven points to three. The start of the second half went much the same way as the first, with both sides contesting evenly until an offence from Loughor on the halfway line allowed centre Toby Smith to step up and land the long-range kick. The lead was narrowed by the visitors a few minutes later when replacement hooker Mike White touched the ball down for the try after a well-worked and powerful driving lineout from close range. The conversion went wide and the scores were 10-8 in the United's favour. As the game went on, the hard work that the Seasiders put in on their fitness was paying dividends and they were soon deep within visitors territory and when Loughor tried to move the ball wide, United's flanker Luke Hansford was only to happy to steal the ball and snipe over from a classic flanker's try under the posts, to which Sutton added the extras. The large crowd didn't have long to wait for the next score which was scored by the deserving Ronowitz and would be the proverbial straw that broke the Loughor camel's back. The try came following a powerful run from Smith which fractured the visiting defence. Smith gave the ball to Ronowitz, who still had a lot of work to do in powering over despite the attention of four defenders. Sutton again added the conversion and the lead was extended to 24-8. With Tenby confidence growing and their visitors heads and energy levels dropping, the home side were now dominant in every area and had even begun to steal the ball against the head at the scrum and linesout and the talented backline were able to cause major problems for the Loughor defence. The United's lead was stretched on the 63-minute mark with a Sutton penalty. Loughor hadn't given up, though, and openside flanker Kyle Hill managed to take advantage of a rare slip in Tenby concentration and sniped in following a quickly taken penalty to score the try, which Smiriglia successfully converted. The last word and the bonus point went to Tenby, however, and the 78th minute try came from replacement forward Andrew Cooke after he chased his own chip ahead to show real pace in beating the Loughor fullback on his way to touch down in the corner. Cooke's try went unconverted, but this didn't seem to matter as the referee blew his whistle for full-time and the delighted United had earned themselves top spot in the section after beating one of the sides tipped to be in contention for the silverware in Division One West this season. Tenby United travel to Crymych tomorrow (Saturday) as they look to move one step closer to retaining the Pembrokeshire Cup that they hold after successfully beating Aberystwyth in last season's final. Kick-off in Crymych will be 2.30 pm, please make the journey up to support the boys in their bid to keep the cup in Tenby for another year.
