Pontarddulais 13 pts.

Tenby UNITED 28

Last Saturday saw a return to normal league rugby for Tenby United following the recent disruption to fixtures due to the autumn international series, and it was smiles all round as the Seasiders came away from a hard fought battle against a tough Pontarddulais side with a maximum five league points, scoring four tries in the process.

The Andrew Price, GD Harries, FBM Holidays and Molson Coors sponsored United travelled up expecting the usual nip and tuck game against the Black and Ambers that is normally the case when the two sides meet, and they were right and had to battle hard to come away with the win.

The Seasiders scored a total of four tries to their hosts one on the way to their result and both sides gave onlookers a fine display in a match that was equally contested up until the hour mark when Tenby's superior fitness and game management gave them the edge over their opponents.

The Black and Ambers went into the oranges with a narrow lead of six points to five following a stop-start first half where both sides shook off the cobwebs and sized each other up, with not a single point being registered on the scoreboard until talented Tenby winger Jack Price touched down for a very well-worked try which came as a result of some excellent handling from both forwards and backs.

Pontarddulais's first half points came from the boot of centre Gary Williams, who landed two penalties near the interval.

After the break, the Seasiders started to gain the upper hand in the contact area, with back rowers Luke Hansford, Patrick Roberts and Roy Osborn securing early ball for the backs to use.

United's outside-half Lloyd Thomas put his side in front early on with a well-struck penalty on 42 minutes, which was followed by two fine tries.

The first one came when scrum-half Jonathan Rogers cut the home defence to ribbons after linking with forwards Roberts and captain Chris James and the next saw winger Price cross the line for his second touchdown of the afternoon on the end of another well-worked move from the Seasiders backline that came straight off the training paddock. Both efforts went unconverted.

Pontarddulais's replacement flanker Ethan Miles scored his side's only try of the game when a very rare chink in the United defence left a small gap for him to squeeze through after a spell of pressure from the Black and Ambers forwards. Williams converted and closed the gap to 18-15 in the United's favour with 20 minutes to go.

As he game entered the final quarter, the Seasiders turned up the pressure and with the forwards now dominating the scrum and linesout and their hard work in the fitness department now giving them the advantage, they took control of the game and with good tactical kicking putting them in the Pontarddulais half and Roy Osborn and Chris James pinching the odd 'Bont' throw-in, it meant that they stayed in their half to pile on the pressure.

Their efforts soon paid off when the hard work from the back row earned a penalty and Thomas Lewis stepped up to put it between the uprights.

The final nail came for the home side right on 80 minutes when sustained forward pressure from the Tenby pack deep in Pontarddulais territory saw them shove the home pack off their own ball and number eight Roberts was able to pick up and smash his way over for the try, which Lewis converted, earning the bonus point and securing a hard fought win that the whole of Tenby Utnited were proud of.

Tenby entertain Whitland tomorrow (Saturday) in the SWALEC Plate competition and with Whitland visiting Heywood Lane for the first time in years with the view to overturn their recent Pembrokeshire Cup defeat at the hands of the Seasisders, the game promises to be a real cracker and the people of the area are asked to go up to cheer the boys on in what isn't just a massive game for them and the club, but also a huge day for the town.

The television cameras will also be following both teams for the day and speaking to members of both clubs and picking supporters to interview too.

Kick-off is at 2 pm at Heywood Lane where there will be food and drinks served throughout the afternoon at the newly opened Hoppy's Bar.

As large crowds are expected, people driving to the game are urged to park at Greenhill School where parking is available.
