Thursday, April 25, was not a good day to enjoy the scenic beauty visible from Newport GC, hills shrouded in mist and a cold northerly wind adding to the discomfort of wet clothes writes J.J.)!
Despite the torrid conditions, eight of the nine foursomes completed their matches before enjoying the luxury of very hot showers and a good meal.
Somehow the pairings went awry and a Newport couple were complaining that they had no opponents! Strange to say, we also had a pair unable to find their scheduled opposition; obviously they had teed-off with the wrong pair. The problem may have been caused by the use of two tees, but thankfully a foursome got together!
First off into the mist were Darrell Jones and Trevor Lewis against John Collingridge and Alan Griffiths. It was a close contest that went to the 17th before the result was settled in favour of Trefloyne.
Meanwhile, from the 10th tee, Barry Wood and Roger Woodward took on Lawrence Forrest and Gareth Evans. After nine holes the lads decided to call it a draw and headed for the showers - the inside ones!
Second match from the first was Pat Casement and Steve Jones vying with Chris James and Roy Evans. Again the game was well contested, but this one ended with the home pair winning 2 up.
Back on the 10th, Wyn Hopkins and Stuart Mills took on Kevin Duggan and Allan Rogers. Wyn and Stuart put up a valiant effort, but found the home advantage just too much, going down 2 and 1.
Thirdly from the first, Graham Longster and Jack Zeraschi were against Mike Underwood and Alwyn Davies. This was a nip and tuck tussle which finally saw Graham and Jack take control for a 3 and 2 win.
The next match on the 10th saw Wayne Connett and Dave Crowley take on Clive Newton and Ben Davies. With the lead changing hands regularly, it looked to be an heading for an all-square finish, but a final burst from Wayne and Stuart gave them a 2 and 1 win.
Fourth group off tee one was Derek Jones and Glyn Latcham against Mark Jilks and Ian Hinchley. It was an unlucky day for the home pair, as, up against an in-form duo from Trefloyne, they were outplayed and suffered a 7 and 6 thrashing - pleased to be in out of the rain early though!
Last off the 10th were John James and Dennis Holloway taking on Ieon Davies and John Civil. An early lead for the home pair was soon eroded as Dennis and John took control, finishing six up with five to play.
One more game to go, Bob Burks and Graham Harrison against Phil Johns and Chris Jones. Still not fully recovered from illness, Graham found the conditions tough and took an early shower. Bob played well, but could not overcome the opposition, going down 4 and 3.
A satisfying win for Trefloyne by 5.5 - 3.5.
