Seniors' section

Last Thursday, the seniors held their belated annual general meeting and Christmas dinner, which was preceded by the Derek Jones Trophy match.

Entrants for the trophy, who included club professional Oliver Duckett, were divided between the first and 10th tees for the 9.30 tee off, which unfortunately for the first groups out coincided with a very heavy hailstorm.

The second wave of golfers kicked their heels in the changing rooms until this had blown through and managed to avoid any further showers for the whole round.

The result couldn't have been closer, with three players finishing on 31 points, one of whom was Derek Jones, who since putting up the trophy had not had the honour of putting it on his own mantelpiece. Well he will have to wait another year, because he was pipped at the post by Darrell Jones, with Mike Crowley taking third place.

Nearest the pin results were: third hole - Darrell Jones at 6m 7cm (measured by Oliver who was born post decimalisation); and 16th hole - Pat Casement at 25' 0" (measured by Pat, who was born pre-decimalisation)

A very pleasant lunch was had by all and this was followed by the inevitable raffle.

The AGM then took place and outgoing captain Trevor Lewis handed over the captaincy and more importantly the allocated parking space to Pat Casement. Pat will be ably assisted by Darrell Jones, who has volunteered to become vice-captain, and Graham Harrison will continue as treasurer.

The meeting thanked Trevor for his sterling efforts during the last 13 months.

Richard Davis proposed sponsoring a three-club and putter competition for the seniors and this will be added to the diary of events.

Presentations were also made for the winners of the Alan Chapman Seniors Aggregate Cup, which was won by Stuart Mills, and the Seniors Championship, which was won by Pat Casement.

DORMEL TROPHY

The first silverware competition took place on Saturday in glorious sunshine, which ensured a good turnout.

The early starters had the benefit of frozen ground at tee-off which ensured the ball bounced on instead of plugging. However, it was one of the later starters who enjoyed warm sunshine for the duration of the round who took the honours.

So the first trophy of the year goes to Meurig Evans with 40 points, second was Colin Jenkins on 36, with Barry Neale third on 33.
