Tuesday was a very busy day for the Seniors. They were set to play a 15-hole Stableford competition, with hidden partners, sit down to lunch and then enjoy the presentation of a season's worth of awards. I am pleased to report that everything went rather swimmingly, with just a couple of minor exceptions.

The weather was splendid, with the exception of a brief but savage hail squall just after the first match had left the first tee, everybody enjoyed their golf and lunch was delicious. The club changed personality when play was over, becoming more like a cross between the BAFTAs and the Oscars -especially since we were all (except Jim) in the dark concerning some of the results. Like the larger award ceremonies, there is rather a lot to get through, so here are the results:

The 15-hole competition - The individual top spot went to Jim Martin, with a fine score of 31 points, Mel Neale also achieved 31 points, but narrowly lost out on countback. After some electronic chicanery, the secret draw for hidden partners was completed, and the winning combination was Stan Hudson and Peter Williams with 56 points. Second place was scooped by Peter Woodhouse and Roger Scholfield with one point less.

The Eclectic Gross Competition - The award for this competition is the Des Stone Trophy, and this year it was won by Allen Watts with an eclectic low of 63. Second was Jim Moffatt with 64.

The Eclectic Nett Competition – The trophy was won by a startled Bart Youll, who had no idea that he was in line for the award. His 59 points pushed Derek Cole kicking and screaming back into second place. Included in this competition is the Colin Griffith Trophy for the top over 75 years old players; this year Peter Woodhouse creaked into first spot with 58 points and Mike Fox staggered into second place with 55 - all that was missing was the trophies! - Scotland Yard has been alerted and investigations are ongoing!

The Seniors' Order of Merit - Based on the total score of a player's six best rounds of the season, this year's winner was Bill Davies with 233 points, while the runner-up was Stan Hudson with 227. The award for this event is the Clifton John Trophy, which was sadly absent - however, it is reported to have been located in Bill Davies's garage! A second trophy, the Ken Goldsbrough Bowl, is awarded for the top scorers over 75 years of age, Dudley Williams with 196 points followed by Mike Fox with 191 points stepped forward to receive this trophy - but guess what....?

And that was just about that for another winter season's Senior golf.

Next week sees our first inter-club match when we take on Glynhir Seniors here at Tenby - and then we shall soon be off to Tracey Park for three days. I leave you with a photograph of a fine body of men (see above)!
