Tenby’s new 3G pitch has been described as a huge boost for the local area.

Cymru Football Foundation has unveiled its latest ‘fit-for-future’ facility – a resurfaced, full-size 3G at Ysgol Greenhill.

The CFF – backed by the Department of Media, Culture and Sport’s Multi-Sport Grassroots Facility Programme – has invested close to £400,000 into extending and resurfacing the existing 2G facility alongside support from Sport Wales and Pembrokeshire County Council.

Opened by former Wales footballer Joe Ledley and ex-Greenhill pupil Archie Hughes of the Scarlets – this latest completed project takes the total of new or upgraded full-size 3Gs invested in by the CFF to 16 – with further investment already planned for several sites across Wales.

The new facility will provide easy access to sporting opportunities for pupils of Ysgol Greenhill during the day, whilst also providing opportunities for grassroots football to thrive out of school hours in a huge boost for the local area.

Pupils at the secondary school got a taster by enjoying the first action on the pitch on Friday, May 23, before the half-term holidays.

Councillor Rhys Sinnett, Cabinet Member for Resident Services at Pembrokeshire County Council said: “I’m absolutely delighted to see the completion of this fantastic new 3G facility at Greenhill. Thanks to joint funding from the Cymru Football Foundation and Sport Wales, through Welsh Government grant support, we’ve been able to deliver a top-quality surface that will benefit both the school and the wider community.

“This £700,000 investment is not just about new turf – it’s about creating opportunities for young people and residents of all ages to get involved in football and rugby, whether that’s through competitive fixtures or recreational play. The improved surface, extended playing area, new fencing and energy-efficient lighting mean this facility is fit for the future.

“Pembrokeshire Leisure will now take on the ongoing management of the pitch, ensuring it remains a vital community hub for years to come. This project is a brilliant example of what can be achieved through strong partnership working and a shared vision for education and grassroots sport.”

Director at the Cymru Football Foundation, Aled Lewis said: “The Cymru Football Foundation is committed to investing in facilities that inspire communities. A new facility in the heart of Tenby will enable more players to play, improve the experiences of current players and act as a hub for sport in the local community.

“A huge thank you to our partners, UK Government and both Pembrokeshire County Council and Sport Wales in supporting the development of such a high-quality facility. Through the power of collaboration, we’re making huge strides in improving football facilities in Wales on and off the pitch.”

County councillor for Tenby’s north ward, Cllr Michael Williams said: “It’s wonderful to see the installation of this new pitch, the result of several years extremely hard work by officers of PCC.

“This exceptional facility was delivered by a superb team, led by Gary Nicholas, hugely assisted by Anthony Price, project manager, Emma Devonald, and Parry Lloyd, clerk of works.

“These officers should be thanked and congratulated for bringing this project to fruition,” he added.

The CFF supports the development of football through investment and guidance as it delivers the Football Association of Wales’ commitment to develop inspirational ‘fit-for-future’ football facilities that will improve and grow Welsh football both on and off the pitch.
