Tenby’s Gareth ‘Mogsy’ Morgan has been making waves in the World Rankings of what is regarded the toughest and most challenging of all Single Handed Watersports disciplines known as Hydrofoil Downwinding.
Waterman ‘Mogsy’ has been taking his surf foiling from coastal beach and reef breaks to surfing offshore Ocean swells energies armed with only a board, hydrofoil and paddle.
Thousands and thousands of world class watermen across the globe use GPS satellite tracking technology to help keep them tracked as part of their coast guard safety protocol whilst out offshore on their ocean runs and voyages.
These GPS tracks are electronically uploaded to a World Ranking Downwind Leaderboard to assess performance gains and comparisons of downwind runs across the globe and released on Instagram for publication to the hydrofoil communities.
The latest Hydrofoil monthly Downwind Leaderboard top 10 in the World results so far in 2026 again released on Instagram whereby Mogsy has made 6th in the World in the Extra Distance metric which indicates the surf style navigation of Ocean swells over a 10km split.
‘Mogsy’ said: “I’m right up there in the world rankings even with World Champion Hawaiian surfing brothers and watermen John and Nathan Florence, Nathan being in 2nd place from all the uploads made around the world. I’m getting faster and faster splits on my Sponsors Code 980S and 770R Hydrofoils.
“I’ve trained so hard to get my power to weight ratio at +90Kg to a pro athlete form to perform at this level, momentum is on my side! I love the flow state you experience when surfing ocean swells savoring the ride not rushing to get to the destination, truly a special medative state you experince over the course of the run, even though you are exposed to all kinds of hazards, its so addictive!
“I’ve been on a worldwide mission over the last few years to seek out sporting excellence in this field which has lead me to all corners of the globe and bring these learnings back to Wales. I’m still pushing to get faster splits, watch this space! Cymru am Byth!”
Last year’s 2025 top 100 results were published on Instagram in January this year where ‘Mogsy’ made 69th position in the World in the best Downwind 10Km split in 2025 results at 18% extra distance.
Mogsy continued: “I’m also in the top 100 downwind riders for my 1km sprint split but way more stoked with the 10km Ocean swell navigation split performance. Noticed my splits are quite a bit faster than any UK runs.
“So we’re right up there in world rankings for performance splits and particularly in surf style ocean swell navigation which is mind blowing experience going from fast overhead wave of your life to another then another!
“Truly mindblowing foiling discipline and I’m still going through the gears on smaller faster foils and already smoked my 2025 splits to improve in the first few months of 2026.
“I’m currently working hard on this incredible sport and hoping to make the top 50 world rankings splits in 2026, taking on Professional Watermen half my age!”
‘Mogsy’ was the first to pioneer Hydrofoiling in Wales during his campaign competing in the British Kite Racing Circuit whereby European manufactured Carbon Fibre Hydrofoils were fabricated to push kite racing faster and faster reaching speeds beyond two and a half times the speed of the wind.
Mogsy podiumed positioned in 3rd place for his division in the British Kite Racing Championship. He also was invited to participate in the Kite surf Racing Olympic Trials at the British Sailing Academy in Weymouth.

He added: “The arms race involved in Kite Racing adopted the hydrofoil which was made possible by carbon fibre moulding technology and those of us involved at this embryonic stage all knew that Hydrofoils were going to explode and evolve into the form that it is today.
“Even the sailing fraternity got caught with its pants down and the Americas Cup Sailing program were slow on the uptake.”
‘Mogsy’ has also been UK Kitesurfing Circuit Wavemaster Champion of his division and was also British National Single Handed Skiff Racing Champion qualifying him to compete in the prestigious UK Endeavour Sailing Championships.
He promotes Hydrofoiling in the Pembrokeshire and South Wales Region by organising Hydrofoil Racing for riders to grow, learn, demonstrate and promote this incredible sport.
