Tenby Over 50s Walking Football Club is going from strength to strength.
Following success in the Welsh veteran’s football tournament in Carmarthen for the second year running they have attracted further members and have started to attract visits from other clubs from Wales and from England. Over recent months they have played teams form Haverfordwest, Cardiff, Llanelli and have recently entertained a veterans’ side from Bristol.
They have now entered the UK National Walking Football Competition and have been drawn away to Clevedon in the first round, on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
The club continues to train on the astro turf at Greenhill School, Tenby on a Saturday morning at 10 am and any over 50s are invited. The cost is £3 a head. The majority of the players are over 60 which is the age group of the national competition entered. The aim of the club is inclusivity and is ideal for anyone - from those wanting to enjoy the social side of belonging to a club and just having a kick around - to providing for the players who still have the desire to be competitive. The social side of the club is very much of primary importance.
The club’s success and growth has meant increased travelling to events and increased entertaining for teams that visit Tenby, as well as investing in health and safety equipment. The club has recently purchased a defibrillator, which was financed from player’s own generosity. It is hoped the club will continue to attract visiting clubs to Tenby and Saundersfoot which will obviously benefit the local business community.
The club has put out an appeal to local businesses in Tenby and Saundersfoot that if anyone is interested in providing any financial sponsorship to this club any support will be greatly appreciated. The club treasurer is Mr. Jerry Long and he can be contacted on 07798 841491.
Tenby’s most recent matches have resulted in a victory over Bristol 1-0 with a last-minute goal from Ray Wise and a 14-4 victory over Llanelli with goals from Tiffer Jenkins, Dennis Genovese and Ray Wise.
