THE 2025 National Redwing Championships hosted by Tenby Sailing Club are now in full swing following the Commodore’s reception and Curry evening on Saturday.

The first race on Sunday was won by Robin Wood and Steve Leach in R244.

The 10 boats, six from Tenby and four from Looe, started in a lovely force two SE wind and wall-to-wall sunshine.

At the windward mark R244 was leading R190, extending the lead quickly on the downwind leg.

In Lap 2, Tenby boats tacked wisely as the wind shifted 10 degrees at a time, ending with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions.

Three Looe boats were next, leaving 7th, 8th, and 10th for Tenby, and 9th place for Looe.

Race two was postponed until Monday as the breeze faded away.

Six races are scheduled for the week together with evening entertainment starting last Sunday with the Summer Spectacular, and including live music and BBQ on Wednesday, 27 August, and a second BBQ on Friday before the prize presentation.

The first National Redwings were built in 1939 at Looe in Cornwall.

Uffa Fox designed the boat along traditional lines to cope with the choppy seas off the South Cornish Coast.

With similar conditions, Tenby Sailing Club adopted the Class in the 1950s, and is proud to maintain a racing fleet.

Tenby’s Bill Dowell (R 228) is Secretary of the National Redwing Association.

Dinghy racing

Four boats raced in light Northerly winds and a significant tidal flow running south on Tuesday, 19 August.

This made for a long slow beat which favoured the faster boats.

Bill Dowell forewent sailing to organise the evening’s race.

Results: 1, R241, Julian and Michelle; 2, Scorpion 1995, Peter and Sharon; =3, Europe 986, Robin; =3, R228, Bill Dowell PRO; 5, ILCA, 7 Steve.
