Club Sailing
It was windy again on Saturday for the three scheduled races for the June Cup in the club’s summer series run by Ted and Lucas.
A triangular course with upwind start was set for the first race, the windward mark off North Beach, the gybe east of St. Catherine’s and start line off Monkstone.
The strong gusty westerly presented the six competing boat with significant challenges and nearly everyone capsized at some stage.
Dan and Daniel in the RS400 got their swim over early, before the start. Jaime/Griff in their Osprey, not to be outdone, capsized more than once, both upwind and down. Peter/Igor in the Scorpion succumbed on the gybe. Mike/Deanna went trawling with their spinnaker under the boat, but kept the boat the right way up. Richard and Martin in club Lasers joined in the mayhem despite wearing round at the gybe mark.
Great fun was had by all and some spectacularly fast sailing when the right way up. After four laps of a smallish course, the honours were taken by Peter/Igor in the Scorpion, followed by Dan/Daniel in the RS400, then Jaime/Griff in their Osprey, then Richard and Martin in the Lasers.
The second race was over the same course, but the Lasers both decided enough was enough and they retired; Mike/Deanna had retired in the first race, unable to untangle their spinnaker, leaving only the RS400, Scorpion and Jaime/Griff’s Osprey to contest this race.
The Osprey suffered a long capsize early in the race and they retired. The Scorpion capsized at the gybe and, despite recovering well, couldn`t prevent the RS400 taking this race, with the Scorpion in second.
For the final race, the same three boats competed, the Osprey having recovered its composure.
This time the course was windward leeward, so the boats could fly spinnakers downwind without too much trauma.
More issues in the Osprey opened the door for the other two boats and after several laps, it was the Scorpion who took first on corrected time, from the RS400, and with it the June Cup for Peter/Igor. Well done to them.
Junior report
Conditions last week were good with a sailing breeze suitable for all, although there were a few absences due to it being half term. Most beginners have almost finished their stage one and are gaining more confidence when sailing on their own. The stage 3 and 4 groups were all on the water. The usual BBQ completed an enjoyable evening.
We have now rearranged the race training day for Saturday, July 1, 9 am to 4.30 pm.
Those who booked a place on the previous cancelled day can have their entry carried forward.
Cruiser racing
Two races to report. The Saturday evening race attracted six entries and was sailed in a testing force 4 to 5 WSW. Race officer Blake set a course around Monkstone, into Saundersfoot bay, leaving the pontoons to port and back.
It was a broad reach to Monkstone and the fleet stayed together, but with a close reach to the pontoons, John Griffihts in Tejeda rounded ahead, with Steve Lewis just managing to round them inside Tony and Billy in Apatshe, with Slipstream close behind.
Again the fleet closed up during the broad reach back to Monkstone. The leg back to Tenby had been expected to be a beat, but proved to be just a close fetch due to a change in wind direction. However, everyone enjoyed the race.
Final results were Apatshe, Aries, Slipstream, Tejeda, Denny Young in Heather and Phil Rees in Accolade.
Last Sunday afternoon’s race attracted five entries. Numbers are well up this year, with eight boats all keen to take part. Maybe we will get all eight out at the same time soon.
Again a force 4 to 5 breeze gave a reach to North High Cliff buoy, with Aries just ahead of Slipstream and Tejeda just behind. Accolade was also now in contention, with Heather a little behind, probably due to over-reefing the genoa. A solid beat down the Sound to Giltar Spit buoy followed and the three leading boats rounded almost together.
Due to the strong gusts, no spinnakers were flown on the run back to NHC. Again the leading three rounded very close together, but Slipstream lost a little on the rounding, due to not setting the sails quickly enough for the second beat back to NHC.
The wind had abated slightly for the broad reach back to Tenby and Tejeda risked the spinnaker and reached the Skirs alongside Aries. However, Aries lost the wind by staying in too close and Tejeda took line honours. Slipstream saw the problem, stayed well out and gained a little time.
On handicap, the positions were Aries first, Slipstream just 30 seconds behind, Tejeda third, Accolade fourth and Heather fifth.
Hope to see everyone on the water tomorrow (Saturday) at 6 pm.
