Club Sailing

Sunday, October 25, dawned grey and calm. As race time approached, a light north-easterly filled the bay and four boats set out to contest the two races run by Jaime Bohata.

After setting the course for the first race, the wind then reversed and became a south-westerly. A new course was laid starting over towards Monkstone, upwind towards Caldey, then left out to the eastern.

At the start, the boats were away together; Ted/Lucas hit the pin end and did a turn; some went in towards the beach, while others chose to go out. At the windward mark, the out to sea route was found to have paid and Ted/Lucas rounded first, followed by Mike/Deanna, the Alastairs and Jon in his Phantom. That remained the order over the three following laps, during which the wind rose steadily, giving some cracking reaching down the choppy waves. At the end, on corrected time, it was Ted/Lucas from Mike/Deanna, then Jon, then the Alastairs.

A second race followed immediately over the same course. Again Ted/Lucas reached the windward mark first and it was spinnakers up for the down wind legs. Rather more challenging this race in the brisker winds and things did not go well, particularly on the drop at the leeward mark. First became last, and so it remained until the end, with spinnaker sheets knotted beneath the hull. Mike/Deanna correctly called the worsening conditions, left their spinnaker in the boat and sailed to a commanding win. Jon took second, having no spinnaker to distract him. The Alastairs took third, inches ahead of Ted/Lucas, who had eventually managed to unknot things and get the spinnaker up again in winds that abated somewhat.

Sunday, November 1, there was no club racing because of the Regatta going on at Tata Steel Sailing Club, Port Talbot, which various club members attended. Back to normal this weekend.
