Club Sailing

The recent strong winds abated on Sunday, permitting two races to be sailed in the club's winter series. Danny Owen set a smallish triangular course for the first race in a light westerly, but quite a lumpy sea, courtesy of the recent rough weather.

A downwind start saw spinnakers hoisted for the first reach, but hard to keep them drawing in the lumpy conditions and light wind. The reach was very broad and it paid to sail angles to keep the spinnaker full, a tactic employed by Ted and Gill in an Osprey and they reached the gybe mark first.

The next leg proved too tight for spinnakers, which were dropped a short way along it, then it was a right turn at the eastern mark and back upwind to the start.

The upwind leg was challenging, with plenty of shifts, but at the finish it was the Ospreys of Ted and Gill from Mike and Deanna in second, followed by Jaime and Aubrey, also Osprey, and Richard, in a club Laser, in third and fourth - not sure in which order!

A second windward leeward race followed immediately, including newcomer John Nuttal in a Phantom. John is obviously going to be a contender; he started first and finished second on the water, splitting the Ospreys and taking the win on corrected time, from Mike and Deanna, then Ted and Gill.

The sun shone for the return to shore after a beautiful late autumn morning on the water.

Winter Series

Racing will continue until Boxing Day, weather permitting, with two races on Sunday mornings. Any dinghy sailors out there looking for some racing are welcome to attend. Membership taken out now will include all of next year, too, so the winter racing will effectively be free.

Junior power boat success

Last week, six of our youngsters were put through their paces by powerboat instructors Howard and Hester to go through the two-day level two power boat course. Conditions were good for end of October with the added benefit of a midday tide, so that various slow speed manoeuvres could be practised in the harbour.

All six achieved the necessary standard. They were  Gareth Davie, Harri Richards, Holly Macdonald, James May, Owen Rogers and Noah Yeates. Many thanks to all concerned helping out with the event.
